I just came across this thread... Very well done!!! I am in awe. It makes my framing project pale in comparison, yet inspires me at the same time. Thank you.
So life has happened, in a VERY good way, I now have a second child! My son was born on February 11th!!
The loves of my life, Silvija and Nikolaj:
So of course I had to make my card room into a third bedroom. I didn't want to leave this on the wall, especially with two little ones running around, so it's time to give this frame a bit of a vacation until we get a new house with a Man Cave! I couldn't be HAPPIER to put my hobby aside for my family, so it's all good!
With the immense size, weight and fragility of this frame, I wanted to build a wooden case so I could safely store it. Here are a few pics. It cost about $120 in material, but it was really fun to build!
collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

My Top 3 favorite things here. From your dad. The R-I-P-K-E-N quest and success. Conceived, designed, built and assembled by you.
An amazing piece of a great player by a dedicated collector.
Congrats! Jim
I echo this exactly. I love the fact it was from your Dad. It seems like that fact made you put a little more time and effort in making it extra special. I still have almost every card that my dad and mom got me for Christmas when I was a kid.
The "RIPKEN" at the top is really a nice way "garnish" the whole piece. The dedication and quest in getting those is a neat story.
Congrats on the little one too! That might be the most awesome thing in the thread!
By the way....I noticed that you laid it out with AUTOCAD. I am trained in AUTOCAD. I went to vocational school from 1996-98 for Architectural CAD. What release do you have? I don't even know how many releases they have had since I haven't worked in CAD since 2002. My training got me in the door at my local power company as their map technician on AUTOCAD release 14. I trained on release 12 (which was DOS based). I still work at the same company, but I have had 3 different jobs with them since 1998. Now, I am a meter field rep.

Good eye! I did lay it out in AutoCAD... I've been using AutoCAD since I first learned it in high school back in 1993! I started in Release 10 (DOS), but I'm currently using AutoCAD 2012. I've had CAD jobs my entire career, and I currently design high voltage electrical substations. I also laid out the case in AutoCAD.

Very cool! So, our jobs and careers are kind of linked.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
These type threads are why I check this board. Just a really great story about your father buying it for you. I think a child being so appreciative is a gift to the parent! You are a good son.
