question about not receiving items from ebay

I purchased two cards (separately from two different sellers) off ebay. One in November and the other in December. I paid immediately and the cards were shipped with tracking. After the original "departure from post office" the tracking was never updated and I ended up getting a refund on the first card (from November). It doesn't look like I'm going to get the second card either.

My question to you ebay sellers and experts is, is it possible for sellers to somehow screw with the tracking info so the item doesn't actually get sent but the tracking info looks as if it was? For instance, if a seller sold an item for far less than they expected and didn't want to just give a refund and make up an excuse, and to avoid getting a negative, could they put in some phony tracking info?

The main reason why I ask is I got both cards for pretty good deals (nothing crazy cheap), but one of the sellers (who is a top rated seller), has one negative already that says "seller never shipped item," on an item that's almost $500. Not sure if it matters but the sellers response was, "we shipped usps lost item refund was issued.

Is it just a weird coincidence that I buy two cards in two months and both are "lost" through usps and that this seller has a negative for the same thing I'm asking about?

anyway, sorry for wordy question/story. Any opinions would be great.

A seller can buy shipping and never send it. The tracking is automatically updated in the eBay system as "shipped" from what I understand.

Entirely possible both were lost in the mail, possible, ya know image

    Interesting. I didn't know that.

Another question; both of these cards arrived at a post office and departed from the post office and were never seen after their departure. Is this somehow possible with what your saying? Or because the items were actually scanned as arrived and departed, is it more likely that they did send in mail and really did get lost?

    Thanks for your input btw.

This is somewhat true. Once the seller pays for shipping it shows up on Ebay that shipping was paid for but it has to actually be scanned in at the post office before any other shipping info is shown on Ebay or on the post office site. Below is info I copied from the post office site for an item I bought a couple days ago.

If they arrived at the post office and were scanned then they were probably lost. I don't think there's a way to manipulate the tracking info.

I was told by a post office employee that once they scan the package it becomes property of the USPS (for insurance reasons) so, if this is true, I think it'd be unlikely that the seller could get their package scanned and then get it back somehow.
