I wish the Red Sox would start losing more games . . . they are in danger of playing themselves out of a top 10 draft pick!
Seriously though, as bad as the Red Sox have been for most of the season, I've seen a lot of encouraging signs for next year. I like getting Hanley out of left field because it makes room for an outfield of JBJ, Betts, and Castillo. That's one helluva defensive outfield. And with JBJ finally starting to hit, it's not the worst hitting trio of outfielders either.
Aside from a couple terrible months, Miley has actually been okay. About what you'd want from a #3 or #4 pitcher. Porcello's last 2 starts have been fantastic. Joe Kelly won 6 games in August after an absolutely miserable April through July. E-Rod has been mostly decent every time out. And aside from the 7-ER game against the Mariners, Owens has looked like a bona fide major league starter.
I still think they need a ton of pitching help for next year and would love to seem them sign Price, Cueto, or Zimmerman. And the bullpen is clearly another weakness. But with a few good moves I think the 2016 version of the Red Sox could be competitive again.
Barndog...you are of course correct on the Miller comment I made. He was traded late in the season to the O's, and then picked up by the Yankees. I think it was his very short time with the O's that had me thinking he went to the Yankees from the Red Sox. Thanks for the correction.
Anyway, he's turned out pretty good for the Yankees.
They have a pretty good catcher too who says he will play 1st base if they want him to which will free space for another pretty good catcher that is now on the disabled list.
This also would allow them to keep a pretty good backup catcher that they now have.
They have depth at middle infield also and could possibly trade Pedroia for a top of the line starting pitcher.
They still need to get rid of fat man, who could possibly stay if he gets his weight under control, but lazy man has to go even if it costs them a few million as they can not afford to have him around.
Is it me, or does this thread kinda linger at the bottom of the page before additional posts finally show up?? It's as though 3-4, or more posts are added, but you don't get to read them until something in this software kicks in. I know at least Von and Pitboss have posted, but I can't read them. Maybe this post will finally burp the system and show all current posts.
I had it at 20, and bumped it to 100. Oddly, I did finally always get all the posts prior to my change, but it seemed like it took 3-4 posts before I could see them. Weird stuff.
You can also just go to the URL on top of the page and overtype the page number at the end of the URL with the next number up and hit enter and it will bring you to the next page till it eventually turns.

Only doing favors for the Yankees right now. Still 5-14 in the RISP department.
I have no clue what Dombrowski is gonna do, but I doubt he'll give up Pedroia. Somehow he needs to jettison either the Walrus or HanRam...painful in terms of $$$. I doubt HanRam is gonna do well at first, where Shaw appears to be doing quite well at a mere fraction of the cost.
Not likely Ortiz will go either, too much history and maybe he just does one more year. Clearly he's thinking about Cooperstown and will easily eclipse the 500 mark in homers...he may well make it there.
Porcello another boat anchor with an ERA of 5.19 I think...waaaaaaaay too high for an ace-type pitcher.
Bogaerts/Holt/some prospects may be the cost of an arm. I don't think anybody wants the Walrus, and should he stay, I hope they drop the hammer on him in the off-season, as in show up at Ft Myers sans 35 pounds or it's 10k per pound over. A sneeze to this loser.
Who knows, can't get any worse...hey, is it Thursday yet???
Ortiz is going to retire as a Red Sox player. He's already earned the 2016 guarantee. Pedroia is not going anywhere. Bogaerts isn't going anywhere. Holt wouldn't bring what the Sox need, so he will likely stay. Ramirez or Sandoval likely will go if the Sox get their way. Wouldn't it be great to find another team for each of them?
And look at the pitching of late! Miley and Kelly are putting up good outings just about every time. Rodriguez is looking better than average. Even Porcello seems to be coming around. So yeah, one #1 starter and a completely revamped bullpen will likely be the focus in the offseason. Anything else is gravy.
Fate has a way of intervening in ones life. I bought 1 of those Target rewraps (4 packs plus 50 loose cards) a few months ago. Pulled a JBJ Topps Chrome rookie refractor,#ed. Great. Later the same day he was sent down. Not so great. Now he has resurrected himself. Strange how the coincedences evolve.

I really have a gut feeling that Pedroia is on the way out. He is not what he was and they are loaded with kids that can play 2nd base. Our new leader has no attachment to Pedroia and a package featuring him will get them the pitcher they need and maybe they could throw in one of those 2 anchors as well. Someone will take both of them off our hands even if we have to eat their contracts. Lazy boy has to go for sure.

I'm still in the "no way" camp on Pedroia. Plays harder than anyone on the team and has been that way since day one. First Orsillo, then Pedroia? No way!
It's a bummer that Pedroia hasn't been as good as we've grown to expect him to be. But I am with Barndog in the "no way" camp. He's the heart and soul of the team. I don't care if he's hitting .200 and striking out every other at bat. I want him on that team.
I'm in the Pedroia is staying camp, he's just too good at 2nd base. Will really be shocked if he gets traded.
As for Bo and Zo, I could care less where they go. I caught a Red Sox game here in Atlanta, no spark from the HanRam, but Walrus didn't play, I think it was during the texting the hottie time.
I would not mind seeing Remy check his 401k more closely in the off season...how about Mr. Cheese and Iron, the Eck? HOFer, Red Sox history, fan fave, knows the game and can analyze the plays as good as anyone, being a pitcher is a BIG plus. I'd get the package if he was the announcer along with the new guy...fresh start all around. Remy's ok, but he's had the mike long enough.
Red Sox might have to give up some heavy material to offshoot the Walrus. HanRam at first just ain't gonna work...I struggle to not think of his (both) salary and what they've given back, which is not much.
So, I'm checking out the score of last night's game...don't bother, not good news. Bluejays scored 4 runs in the top of the 10th...final 5-1 Jays. Shaw hits a tater in the game, which makes Dombrowski's decision on that 1st base thing a bit more opaque. BTW, Shaw scores the only Red Sox run. Fatty with the meaningless double.
So, along comes this pop up from "The Sports Buzz" about the 15 most hated baseball players...boy, oh boy, how lucky can we be Red Sox Nation? We've got 3 current players and 1 former player.
No suspense, here they are...#2 is Ortiz; #5 is HanRam; #7 is the Walrus; #14 (perennial nominee), Pierzynski.
Ortiz for failing a drug test in 2003 and dogging it around the bases when he hits a home run. #5 and #7 aren't worth my typing skills. #14 just loves being hated, not sure why.
And the beat goes on. HanRam laughing all the way to the bank...life's good, I'm grabbing over $100k PER GAME sitting on my arsebone watching the game. Hey Rookie Boy, grab me another grape soda.
Another nice win last night...Ortiz hits # 498 and all cylinders firing.
The joke is that Fatty the Walrus had to leave the game in the 6th inning because of mid back tightness. Geez, isn't he supposed to be a professional athlete and take care of himself along the way to ensure he can play at top notch condition...oh, I forgot all that blubber he's gained. Must be pulling on some back muscles badly as he tries to launch all that girth into trying to make a play. OR, he had to respond to some texts and needed to leave the game. I will rejoice when he's gone, the Timlin bus awaits. Get in the weight room bozo and at least make an effort to dump some lbs. What a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZER. The Cherrington boat anchor.
Actually looks like the team is playing nicely, albeit too late to salvage a respectable position in the standings. I thought the September schedule was gonna crush them...not so.
Wow, no posts here in over a week! Red Sox well positioned to at least spoil the Yankees attempts at the top spot.
Just back from New Mexico and my long anticipated visit to Chaco Canyon up in the NW corner of New Mex. Beautiful weather and visit to Chaco. If you have any desire to see the place, I highly recommend it...the road is pretty rough in spots, but worth the effort. The High Road to Taos and the Turquoise Trail are also worth the drive. I would also recommend driving up the Sandia road to enjoy the views...or take the tram.
If you gamble...I was at the route 66 casino (west on I-40), Sandia in Albuequerque and Buffalo Thunder in Santa Fe. The best rules were at route 66, as they offer SUR. Hands down the nicest casino was Sandia, but no SUR at $25 tables. Buffalo Thunder is a bit odd, beautiful outside, but the casino is pretty lame. The smoke was almost overpowering as soon as you hit the escalator to go down to the casino floor. Only one $25 pitch game. As always, lots and lots of people playing slots...which I don't play.
I thought you were going to give me a shout when you came out here. I retired from route 66 casino and it is one of the finest casino's in NM. Did you try the buffet?.
Well, with less than 10 games to go in the season, I expect the odds of the Red Sox finishing at least 15 games out of first place in the AL East to be about 50-50. It really doesn't matter, this season for them was over long ago, as I posted ad nauseam about their inept play and failure to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Even though they had a great pitching effort last night, their RISP stat was a dismal 4-13.
Sadly, the team happens to have two of the 10 highest paid and underperforming players on their roster...you know who they are. This will be forever the Cherrington legacy of hamstringing the team with these two boat anchors, and the prime reason why he is gonzo...toss in the Porcello deal and the hand writing was on the wall near about May.
The ROI for John Henry etal for their $166,770,400.00 in 2015 team salary was sub par at best, costing them $1,029,447 per game...big OUCH there. The Doofus twins sucked up more than their fair share of the dough-re-me, while just about mailing it in with single A performances.
All the travel plans have been made by the team, none of which include post-season destinations...perhaps Ipanema Beach or some other obscure venue that allows them anonymity. I'd pitch in for a one way ticket for the twins to Enewetak Atol in the Marshall Islands.
Tis my last post here this season...I've more than had my say over the past months...time to focus on the Pats and college football...maybe a casino visit or two. Actually, I'm going to Harrah's Cherokee, NC tomorrow.
I don't have NESN, and now I'm glad I don't. I read the blogs to get whatever "inside" info on the Red Sox that I can...living in Atlanta, Red Sox info is pretty scarce. However, this past Sunday NESN chose not to air the Don Orsillo accolades on the field in the 7th inning...worse yet, his sidekick made scant mention of it.
NESN defends its position by saying they have something planned for early October...like this Friday or Saturday...BFD !!! If you have the time to show all 500 home runs of Ortiz, surely you had the time to air the Orsillo piece. I doubt they'll roll out a Mustang like they did for Remy to recognize his years in the booth, more like a box of Fenway Franks sans the buns.
Orsillo became the very fabric of Red Sox Nation in the booth...for FIFTEEN years...and what does he get? Kicked to the curb. Who kept it all glued together with revolving analysts while Remy took a hiatus because his son is a murderer? Don Orsillo. A huge slap in the face for all his time. A fan favorite that will be sorely missed. Not to take anything away from Dave O'Brien, who has been on WEEI for a few years, but the exit of Orsillo will leave a huge hole in the booth. Remy is the one who needed to go IMO, but he'll limp along with his predictable "analysis", he's no Curt Gowdy!!
So, Orsillo has now signed a long term deal with the Padres...good on ya Don, thanks for your time in Boston...sunshine and happier times ahead for you.
How about Blake Swihart, great job last night with 2 home runs.
Is he not everything I said he was?
Orsillo gave everything he had to the Red Sox and was the wrong one replaced on the announcing staff IMHO but we have to move on from there and hopefully Remy is gone too.
I will still be watching every game next year, god willing, no matter who is up there calling the games.

A Red Sox fan for over 50 years. >>
Nobody likes NESN. Whether I cared about Orsillo or not , refusing to air that was a straight up Dbag move. NESN however, is merely a sock puppet for Red Sox ownership though so lets put the blame for everything they do where it belongs, NESN is 80% owned by fenway sports group.
You can be certain anything they "planned" for October was only planned after the fans freaked out over this and is purely damage control .
How about Blake Swihart, great job last night with 2 home runs.
Is he not everything I said he was?
No, I don't think so...you raved about him being the "spark" the club needed when he came up. He wasn't.
He hits two home runs last night for a grand total of 5 for the season, and you think he's Johnny Bench. He's done a good job, but mediocre at best. You refuse to recognize stats, so I won't bore you with his...you can look them up and make a rational assessment, it isn't hard to do. Other than him being "the spark", exactly what did you say about him...I don't recall anything specific that actually came true...other than you watched him in high school, he lived just down the street from you, and he could be "the spark" the Red Sox need...did I miss something?
BTW, it has nothing to do with who's calling the games, it has everything to do with the way they treated Orsillo.
So, I looked it up...this is what you (Pitboss) wrote about Swihart.
Sunday March 29, 2015 10:03 AM (NEW!)
There is no question in my mind that Sweihart needs more work at the catcher position. He was never a catcher until the last few years so needs to work on some stuff this year
The above, plus the "he lived a few miles from me" and "I watched him in High School", and the spark thing is about the sum total of what you wrote about this guy. BTW, 5 home runs does not make him the great player at the position you think he is.
Shaw and Betts are the real stories this year, not Swihart, who, BTW is 0-3 so far tonight.
Irrational exuberance
I have no clue what you're gonna do when the next 5 games are played...well, if you haven't been, perhaps you could drive to Chaco.
I have already seen Chaco and it is quite beautiful.
I don't do casino's except for the fabulous buffets some of them have.
I have the Patriots to watch but that is only one game a week.
But also have all my coins to sell which is taking up more of my time now that the Cherry pickers guidebook to rare error coins has been issued by Whitman.
The 2009 error varieties of the Lincoln cents are in there and there is not a day now where I do not have some to mail out worldwide.
Believe me I find things to do to keep busy until spring training begins again.
Betts was my pick for last year and he improved more this year, Swihart will improve more next year along with a couple of the young pitchers .
They need to pick up one good veteran pitcher to anchor the staff next year either by trade or free agency and just dump fat boy and ram boy for whatever they can get.
To get a good pitcher they need to trade someone like Pedroia and not these young kids who will be the center of the Red Sox for years to come.
By the way Swihart has hit over 300 since the all star break and has now learned how to run a game which is what he needed to do in AAA last year but was brought up too soon.
He still is learning but will be the Red Sox catcher for years to come.
I understand that stats are important and are part of todays game but am not a statistic buff and do not do that kind of research myself.
I'm too old to start now.
Have a great winter guy and get ready to start next years thread right after the super bowl is won by the Patriots!
I think the Red Sox are in a good position to make a serious run at the WS next year. The Cherrington acquisitions did not pan out and now the team is saddled with a huge payroll impact for Fatty, HanRam and Porcello. Issues Dombrowski will have to address in the off season.
The story this year is not Swihart, it's Betts, Bradley JR and Shaw, perhaps Shaw is the biggest story. His stats are impressive and he has 13 homers to boot. Moving HanRam to 1st may not pan out...although he's a SS by his past, they gotta do something to get something out of him, obviously he can't play LF. Bogearts has SS locked up, thus the "what to do with him" dilemma for Dombrowski. Would be a tragedy IMO to move Shaw to Pawtucket and allow the non-performer to slide into the position...kinda reminds me of Carl Crawford...uber BUST.
As for FattyMan, aka The Walrus...if I were Dombrowski I'd put him on notice...loose 35 lbs before you report to Ft Myers, or I'm gonna drop a serious whack on your wallet for every pound you miss the goal by...like maybe $25k per lb. And while he's at it, learn to hit switch again, which is one of the reasons you did so well in SF in the playoffs and had Cherrington drooling over you. Bottom line...Fatty's gotta go, eat the vig and move on. Then you put Holt at 3rd...nucleus made...assuming Swihart continues to improve. I think the bullpen is ok at this point.
You can bet your last penny that Ortiz and Pedroia are going nowhere. I think they may deal Holt, as much as I'd hate to see him go, they have to give up something to get something, and they need quality pitching in a bad way. Porcello is carrying a 5+ ERA and not worth his salary. Maybe they move Holt and Porcello...after all, Dombrowski was kinda done with him in Detroit.
The big unknown is the status of the manager...will the cancer thing signal the end for Farrell? Hard to say.
Yup, Chaco Canyon was one of the coolest places I've ever seen. When you look at what those people accomplished in such a hostile place, simply amazing!!!
Sox have been playing quite well to end the year, much to the chagrin of the NYY, no doubt. Great to see the young outfielders (Betts, especially) leading the way
Having the Spring Training road team in there certainly helped the Yankees situation...not to mention the incredibly lucky snag by Warren. If nothing more, sweeping the Yankees and forcing their fate to the Orioles would have been my move. Pitching was inept by the Red Sox and the perennial lack of key hits doomed this game.
As a dyed-in-the-wool anti Yankee fan, I'll be hoping Tuesday brings disappointment to the Bronx faithful.
BTW, I thought they looked pretty silly grabbing the t-shirts and caps that said "Post Season". Bush League stuff. So, if they lose Tuesday, or come short of the WS, will they hand out caps that say "Post Season done"?
I can't wrap my brain around the idea of bringing back Farrell after his treatment. He sucks , at literally every facet of his job , in game, out game player development yada yada yada. Is it only me that think the young guys are flourishing with him gone? Bring the stiff back and watch them all go down the toilet again.
Mercifully the season has finally ended for the Red Sox...on a loss and last place in the AL East with 15 games back. Let the vacations begin.
Everybody but the first base coach will be back in 2016. I wonder if the Farrell thing is more of an emotional decision as opposed to really putting the best manager in there...only time will tell.
Hopefully my posts in 2016 will be more positive...Dombrowski has a lot to figure out.
You gotta go to ESPNBoston.com and read Gordon Eades and check out his final grading of Red Sox players for this season. Can anyone guess the two who got "Fs" ?? Yup Tubbo and HanRam. Here's the kicker, Dombrowski has asked HanRam to report to Spring Training 15-20 lbs lighter. When pressed about The Walrus, the response was he "couldn't remember" the number of lbs, but he was asked to come in lighter.
Listening to talk radio today and they were speculating about this Farrell coming back scenario. They think management is probably going to ditch him at the start of next year .

All they need for next year is one quality pitcher and not some has been either.

But DON'T give away the farm either.

Best to All,
Al
<< <i>Where has Rich Hill been all year? Wow! >>
he has earned a spot in the starting five in 2016
(and another great catch by Betts last night!)
A Red Sox fan for over 50 years.
<< <i>I don't have NESN, and now I'm glad I don't.

Everybody but the first base coach will be back in 2016. I wonder if the Farrell thing is more of an emotional decision as opposed to really putting the best manager in there...only time will tell.
Hopefully my posts in 2016 will be more positive...Dombrowski has a lot to figure out.
I used to go every year but it is too much anymore to get out and face the crowds.
Have a great winter and try not to shovel too much snow.
If he gets well he will be dumped and if he does not they will say he is too sick to run the team.
Dombroski is running into all kinds of grief over what to do with han ram and fat boy and there is no easy way for him to get out of it.
Thanks Ben for your stupid mistakes.
