Card value when submitting?

I think this has been talked about before so sorry if it is redundant but I wanted to know how people go about putting a value on their cards for insurance purposes when submitting.

Do you put a higher dollar amount because you think it's going to grade a higher grade?

Do you put a higher value on a card incase it's lost or stolen and therefore could make money?

Do you put the amount that you paid?

I put a reasonable price. Nothing you put will influence the grade. It's all for insurance. The more you put on your form, the more you may pay in return from PSA. They have a card/value chart to determine shipping fees. You can use that as a guide to maximize value if lost, while also minimizing return fees, if you really wanted to. If it's a 100 max, and I think it will get a grade that may put it over 100, I just put 99.

    Good Luck.

The raw card value I put on the form is the price I paid for it.

Hmmm ... mail fraud against the Federal Government? I'd probably say no. LOL

Seriously, if you think a card is going to "9" and would be worth $50.00 and that's what you pay for, if it "10s" and now is worth $1,500.00, I believe you can call PSA before it ships and pay for a higher amount of insurance before it gets sent back.

  • I usually err low to try to keep return shipping costs down. I don't really know if this strategy works. Anyone else do this?

I do this. I figure if I get lucky, I would owe PSA for a higher service level and could up my return postage/insurance at that point.

    Doug,
This is the exact answer I was looking for.
Im not planning on sending in cards for grading. Long story short, this topic came up and I got into a small argument with someone on another forum.
Basically I said that I value my cards by how much I spend on them. So if I buy a raw card for $20 then I would put the value down as $20 when submitting, no matter the grade I think it will receive.
The guy said that he basically writes down higher values on the insurance form at usps based on time, potentially getting a high grade, aggravation if it gets lost or stolen and the potential for resale.
I'm sure many people do this and quite frankly I don't care. But this guy basically called me a "retard" because I said it was more of a moral issue than anything.
    Thanks for responses everyone
