How do I configure the browser to not show them?

If you are on Windows and using Google Chrome or Firefox, you can get an extension called AdBlock. I've been using that for years, works like a charm.

Not sure about IE. I mostly just use Chrome. I only use IE when a particular site requires it, such as logging in remotely to my work network.

AdBlock has a version for IE... I think it is still beta though and a bit wonky.
I HIGHLY recommend Chrome as a great mix for features, security, and performance though.

Works great with IE11. Cleaned up eBay. Puts a Icon in IE11 status bar.
