Review/Crossover question

I've only ever sent raw cards to PSA for grading. Now I have a card in a BGS 9.5 holder that I need to cross over to PSA 10. What tips can you give me to optimize the chances of success through this process?

I haven't had any luck with BGS to PSA crossovers. In fact all the ones I sent in came back min size or trimmed. These were cards I purchased already slabbed by BGS.

On the other hand, I had a handful of cards I subbed to BGS and wanted to cross them to PSA. I cracked these out and sent them in raw. Every one of them graded out fine.

In my opinion, crack and sub as raw if you want a fair shake. If the card is high dollar and you would rather not crack, send it in for crossover with a min grade of 10. That way you're safe if the card does not meet the minimum grade.

I've had no personal experience, but from what I have read on these boards you will not have much of a chance at getting it into a "10" on a crossover review.

If it's not a high grade card, like Matt stated, crack and sub.

If it IS a high dollar card and that card in a PSA "9" is worth a lot less than in the slab it currently resides, then I think you need a HUGE SET to crack and sub! LOL

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do.

  • I have attempted crossovers on 5 occasions. All attempts were BGS 9.5s crossing to PSA 10. Each card was high dollar and required super express handling fees. Because I did not want to lose the BGS holder in the event the card was graded a 9 or lower by PSA, I marked the min grade required a PSA 10. 2 out of 5 crossed to PSA 10s. The other 3 were rejected for not meeting the min grade. For the 2 that passed, the BGS sub grades were all 9.5 or greater (no 9s). For those that failed to pass, all at least had a 9 sub grade (2 for surface and one for centering). I highly recommend using the min grade option to save you some grief. I would only cross over high dollar cards likely to jump in value being in a PSA holder...otherwise you are just wasting money in fees and shipping costs. Also, always buy the card, not the holder. BGS graded cards with serial numbers > 6000000 likely have "softer" grading standards and pre 6000000 holders. This advice was given to my by a member of this forum and it held true in my crossover attempts. So, to maximize your chances of a PSA 10 cross, ensure the subs are all 9.5+, ensure the serial # is < 6000000, and have min 10 requirement. Good luck. If you want more advice, I suggest presenting front and back scans of the card for the forum to see...may be peoples' eyes can give you a better opinion of the likely result of a cross.

I have had about a 40% cross over rate in my attempts. That number would be lower if the same cards were not tried a second time out of the holder.

Cross over's must be their own order and this can hurt when it comes to shipping costs.

If you are going to crack them out you just have to be prepared to take a loss on the card because there will be some heart ache along the way with this strategy. On several occasions I have BGS 9.5's come back a PSA 8 and lots of BGS 9's come back a grade or two lower. On the flip side I have had a few older BGS's cards actually come back higher in a PSA holder.

Tell us more about the specific cards you plan to attempt to cross over.
