Opinions in investing in Playoff Contenders Football cards?

Yes or No? Some nice high end 10's right now, will these cards stand the market to be huge collection items? Take for example the 2004,Larry Fitzgerald card, PSA 10 sold for $999 pop two....

There will always be a market for Playoff Contenders. They are highly collected and are viewed as the card to get when it comes rc's.

I think Playoff Contenders Football cards are solid. I would caution buying any low pop modern card at a premium as there are very few modern cards that are truly condition sensitive. If I were a football collector, I would also be very leery of investing in a non-QB. If you are buying cards as a player collection that is one thing, but for this generation I do not see many non-QB players holding their value for the long term. Decades ago, you had Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and other non-QB's who could hold their card value. You would have to believe that the non-QB position player is that great to hold their value long term. Look at the value of Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Randy Moss compared to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning for an idea of how values hold for QB's vs. non-QB's. Just my opinion.

I'm an NFL RC collector who dabbles in mid/high end and I won't touch those Playoff Contenders cards, even for players I covet. Probably just a generational thing but to me they are so gimmicky and ugly.
  • "Investing" in any modern cards seems like a terrible financial decision.

Agreed. Unless it's josh Gordon. I hear that worked out pretty well.

It is not something I am interested in doing but there have been plenty of winners in the modern category. Michael Jordan inserts are quick to come to mind.

There are many modern cards that will return a premium down the road if you know who/what to buy.

The lotto is a low risk / high reward investment, if you know which numbers to pick.

  • it all depends on your goal and methods.

If you like to gamble, buy the contenders when they come out, look for high grade no-bodies and hope they blossom into the next superstar.

    Or..

Buy the contender rookies of established superstars now in high grade...hold onto...once they hit the HOF...sell asap for return. I.e. brady, manning, rodgers, etc.
