Interesting Observation on Great Collections (About a Bust Half)

$1292.50 on 06/01 to $579.70 on 06/22, just 3 weeks later.

Just shows how hit-and-miss the auction game can be, and how it all depends on who is (or isn't) watching. I'd have probably valued it somewhere in the middle of both hammers, personally, and set the reserve appropriately. But perhaps the consignor didn't mind throwing the dice.

Either way, hopefully he wasn't too disappointed.

I think there is great price variability in details graded coins. The coin you posted looks very nice. Graded that way because it was cleaned (or restored in a non-professional way). It will not work if you are building a registry set, but it would look GREAT cracked out and put into your Dansco........

Wonder if the winning bidder backed out of the first sale, since it was only a few weeks before, rather than a "flip gone wrong"

That's why auctions are not an indicator of true value. It all depends who is looking and when.
  • Then you have those stellar results they use to run ads on high results. Do your research in their archives, though Heritage and Coinfacts are better.

A wise man once said, "oh, I forgot ". He was funny, too.

Not that this has anything to do with the same coin being "halved", but value is always perceived. and more times than not , at the wrong time.

Almost certainly the first winner either returned the coin or failed to pay. Guessing it was won with hopes that the details grade was a borderline decision.

What are the odds we see this cracked out and auctioned on ebay as a problem free GEM UN!
