Opinions Please: To Buy Or Not To Buy?

Hi Guys,

I'm really curious to get some opinions on something. I lucked out on a recent sub for the 1981 Topps Mark Gastineau RC (see below) and got it in my head that I should put together PSA 10 rookie cards of the New York Sack Exchange. I've got less than $8 invested in the Gastineau and just picked up the Abdul and Lyons for roughly $40 apiece. I've got a line on a PSA 10 1978 Joe Klecko rookie, but it's going to cost me about $430.

My question is this: do you think the group of cards would command a higher price together to a Jets collector (or anyone for that matter) than the sum of the individual cards would?

Consider that the Klecko is a pop 2, Salaam is a pop 9, Lyons is a pop 8, and the Gastineau is a pop 11 - so currently, only 2 of these groups could be assembled.

I don't have much money (lost my job a few months ago) and my primary concern is turning the highest profit possible.

I think they'd look just as nice and make the wallet even happier if you collected them in PSA 9... In fact, the Gastineau PSA 10 might even pay for the entire Sack Exchange in PSA 9. And if you're patient and picky, you can get 9's that look every bit as nice (or better) than the low pop 10's.

I don't believe it would. Even if it did, I don't think it would be significant. Considering your current financial situation I would NOT make that purchase.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • I would be saving for beans, bills, and uncertain times ahead since you are out work. Cardboard will always be there when you get back in a better situation. Best of luck, Mike.

Sound like a risky flip, if $ is tight then stick with the slam dunk deals if you can find them of course. Good luck!
  • Thank you all for being the voice of reason. Although the completist in me is screaming "buy the card!"... I'll hold off.

Side note: I have funds set aside from card sales for card purchases/grading fees to further increase card sales revenue (I do fairly well on subs and have been turning a nice profit overall). Perhaps the "reinvestment" money would be better spent on putting some more subs together.

    But damn...

If you're not completing the 4some for your PC then I'm not sure there's a point. Makes little financial sense.

I'm still not fully over Gastineau's personal foul penalty vs Cleveland in the '87 AFC Divisional playoff game..

I agree with this. Take sure thing profits. I would not be sure you can count on a New York Sack Exchange buyer.

+1. The game would have been over. This play cursed the franchise.

Getting back to the point, I would purchase a solid 9 to complete your set. It makes the most financial sense and you still complete your goal of pairing 4 cards with great eye appeal.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

    It cursed both franchises.

And I wouldn't buy the Klecko.

    Buy the 9

10's can go down big time if a small change in pops goes up/

I think this is a wise move. There are much easier flips to be had. Good luck!
