slum22's Andrew Luck thread... another scan and word heavy post (Huge update with 16 new cards 7/23/

I have been an Andrew Luck fan since he was playing in Stanford. I am a pretty selective collector of modern players. He is pretty much the only modern FB player I collect. Fortunately, I have had a chance to pick up a number of his cards over the last year or two. I don't have the most expensive cards but I have managed to get a good variety. Hope you enjoy the walk through the collection.

My favorite modern FB set is Chrome and I have targeted picking up all of his colored refractor variations. I am pretty close, I believe I just need a couple more colors to complete the rainbow. My most recent pick up is actually my only PSA 9. It is the regular Refractor from the Topps Chrome set. It is a surprisingly difficult card to find in 10 especially for a modern card. The 1965 and 1957 design refractors are very underrated in my opinion as they are only numbered to 99. After the Chrome rows, I have Luck RC's separated by sets. I like the Topps Magic inserts, I am a sucker for mini cards and I like the purple Enchantment design. Not sure why PSA labeled two cards that look to be the same variation differently (hopefully someone can educate me on this). I initially bought the two BGS cards because PSA 10 cards weren't surfacing for those variations. I ended getting a Pink Refractor in PSA 10 so I will look to sell the BGS 10 but the Blue Wave Chuck Strong BGS 9.5 is one I am hoping can cross to a PSA 10 (any opinions on this?). As always, thanks for looking and reading!

Great collection Steve! Luck is a great one to collect. I really like him.

  • Great Stuff!!

I've had great success crossing over Luck BGS 9.5's with at least all 9.5 subs. i would go for it, via straight cross over.

  • Awesome Luck collection! I'd try to cross the Blue Wave...as long the surface looks great which it probably does considering the BGS subgrade. I'm a Chrome collector also and have a decent Luck collection, though not as strong as yours.

I agree with you about the base refractor. I don't know that I've ever seen one with 50/50 centering from L/R. Considering there must be thousands of them out there that is really surprising.
I'm a big Nolan Ryan fan OK???!!!

Steve, I love your Luck collection. Being a Colts' fan, I am slightly biased. He represents everything that you look for in an athlete, both in and off the field. I will be watching your progress with this part of your collection with great interest.
  • Very nice cards. I am a fan of his

    Hiya Steve

Looks like the "Luck" jokes have been taken.

I was gonna say you've had a "lot of Luck" in finding those gems.

Very nice - thanx for sharing. Merry Christmas.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. I have been working non-stop and today was a travel day to start my vacation with my family. I clicked on the post and noticed the second and third rows had the same cards. I have edited to show the proper cards in the second row.

Meatloaf--I agree on the Elite Auto. I love acetate cards. They are hard to appreciate on scans though. After the Chrome refractor variations that is a favorite of mine as well.

Largentcollector--Are you in WA? Wilson is another great young QB. Big fan of his too.

Thosebackpages--Thanks for the advice on the BGS crossover. I am definitely going to give it a shot.

The first NFL game I saw live was the Indianapolis Colts in high school. I watched it with my entire high school football team and the experience was surreal.

Nice collection, here's hoping you uncover a GEM of the Chrome refractor soon. I also vote for crossing the Blue Wave into PSA. I have to second Meatloaf, the 2012 Panini Elite is definitely the best looking card in the group. On an OCD note, the 2012 Panini Contenders would drive me crazy being crooked like that - LOL.

Look forward to seeing your future pickups.

Looks great! Onto the photo variation next?
  • Great collection! Quick question- are you going to collect all of his Topps issues going forward? I'm going to be sending in 2 cards from this year and I was curious if folks like yourself were doing that.

Not to hijack the (Amazing) thread, but Topps will no longer be releasing NFL Football Cards after next season. So not sure if you want to submit his post-RC Topps stuff

dytch2220--I hear you on the crooked card. Not sure why it is hard for PSA to get the card straight in. I am going to do my best not to worry about it. PSA should be glad I don't downgrade them for the tilt they put on my slab.

danthemanunusual--I do not plan on collecting his future Topps issues. I only have one non-RC in the collection, a 2013 Bowman Orange variation (it is pictured below in the second to last row). It is one of two cards I self-submitted. I won that card raw along with the 2012 Topps Chrome Orange Refractor in a 2 card lot on eBay. When I got the two cards they both looked like 10's so I submitted them. I wasn't planning on collecting any of his non-RC's and still don't but I thought I'd keep this one since I submitted it myself.

Thosebackpages--I heard Topps lost their license. While that won't affect my Luck collection since I wasn't planning on buying non-RC's anyway that does detract from my future FB collecting as Chrome is my favorite release.

A few taps on the slab and the card should straighten right out. They most likely didn't install it crooked. It probably moved during transit.

I like the Topps Prime card, myself.

Wow, great info! Thanks for the knowledge. Which company(s) will be the ones to collect afterwards?

It's been a while since I posted a new pickup on here. Just went crazy on the recent PWCC Andrew Luck sale this past week. I picked up 16 new rookie cards I didn't have in the collection. I was really looking forward to getting these cards but it was a little bittersweet upon opening (you'll see why later). As always thanks for looking and I appreciate any replies on my threads. Anyway, here's the cards, with of course a little running commentary:
Starting off with the appetizers. Some of Luck's lower dollar cards. Happy to get them already slabbed and not have to play the subbing game and hope to get 10's that way.
    image
A few more low dollar cards. The Bowman Accolades card is actually a pretty tough ten. That whole set with the colored borders is tough.
    image
I normally don't collect Leaf cards, but these are a couple of really cool looking cards. I am a sucker for the refractor style design. Stoked to add these.
    image
A couple finest cards. Always nice to add a refractor. I am an even bigger sucker for die-cuts.
    image
It is hard to find slabbed jersey cards. I believe I only had one or two gems before I picked these up. One of them has a scratched case, otherwise very happy to have them though. I do wish PSA would slab all the horizontal cards in the same direction so they display the same based on the front of the card.
    image
Here is the bittersweet part of the purchase. I can't blame PWCC as they sent the cards in a box inside of a padded mailer. USPS must have really put banged it up though as these two holders were next to each other and this was the outcome. One slightly damaged case (bottom right) and one fully damaged case. The red jersey card was probably the card I was most happy to have won besides the two Leaf refractors, so I am especially bummed this was the one with the cracked case.

Sorry about those cracked cases Steve. Bummer.

I will say your Luck and Davis threads have been inspiring. While I'm not quite on the same path as you in my chase, I love your threads because they help my identify the ones I want to add.

    Keep em coming.

Steve, I'm sorry about the broken case, but I am so SO happy that you updated this thread! I love the Bowman Sterling dual colored patch and I, too, am a sucker for die cut cards. My one complaint: next time don't go so damn long between updates! image
  • slum22slum22 Posts: 2,594 ✭✭✭✭
Jim--Yes, I am bummed about the damaged holders. The red Certified especially stings as I really like the look of that card. Hopefully, I can work something out with PWCC so I can still end up with the card. I appreciate what you said about my thread. As I have said before, I credit your "what's a grand get you" threads with inspiring me to break out of a basketball only collecting mindset. Seeing all those vintage baseball, football and hockey cards in your thread got me into collecting baseball and football again. I thank you and my wife blames youimage

Bryan--Thanks, if your eagle eyes are correct I might have some additional gems in few months!

Dan--As always, I appreciate your kind words. What can I say, I got caught up in basketball season and forgot to add Luck cards. Stupid me. His cards will probably get more expensive the closer we get to FB season. Don't worry, I should be making more frequent updates going forward. I am bummed I missed out on a couple Topps Chrome refractors I still need. Underbidder on one and my computer froze at the worst time and I didn't even get a bid in on the other (should have set up a snipe just in case). I am stoked with the Bowman patch, my OCD just wishes it was facing the same way as the other two patches. 7 horizontal cards in the lot and 3 sit one way in the holder and 4 sit the other way. I know the back of the card can sometimes dictate the direction the card goes in the slab but people are really looking at the front 90% of the time, I wish PSA could just orient the cards one way on the front consistently and ignore the back. Oh well, first world problems. I think I'll stop talking for a while.
