Nice Rack - Almost

Anybody see why this must be a facimile (i.e. manufacturered later) and not original?

1970_Series_2_3_Rack

BTW, the same seller has a 1968 rack with ROse and maris showing on top. Probably a few yellow flags on that one too.

Should have the hole punch rather than the cross punch?

    Seams aren't wide enough?

    ETA: and mixed series?

Correct. Topps did not introduce the cross-hatch punch hole till 4th series in 1971. 1970 racks should bear a circular punch hole. Seams between sections on this rack are also too narrow. Topps used wider seams that resemble tire tracks through 1972 to support the larger 54-card count in the rack.

These are hallmarks to look for on an authentic 1970 rack. Note the wider seams between sections and the large circular punch hole on the header card.

Tim, when was the one-sided yellow header card used? The one where the reverse is blank?

What do you think about the cellos? I'm actually bidding on those.

David, I have seen those used only for 1971 racks.

The 74s are from the era when GAI mistakenly holdered grocery cellos, 12-card cello packs which were never produced by Topps. The only authentic cello pack produced by Topps in 1974 is a 22-card cello pack with Topps logo and 25c price on front and product code on back ending in either -2 (from leftover 73 cello wrappers used early in 74) or -4.

The 73 Ryan/Yaz cello does not look right to me.

The ' 70 Carew on top and bottom cello seems mighty unlikely, but I don't have the experience to know for sure whether that's possible.

Why would anyone create a rack with those players on top/bottom?

    IMO where there is smoke.....

Just look at the descriptions he provided. It looks like a "chop shop" for unopened to me.

Both of these are not authentic, regardless of the fact that GAI put them in slabs.

If people take the time to fabricate 81 rack packs, they will fabricate anything. A common 1970 rack is worth a nice markup over a 1976 rack and putting common players on top makes it seem more legit. Certainly worth the effort at least.

On the carew cello, compare the corner fold and wrapper back to one of the cellos Fritsch has for sale. Looks like a 3rd grader resealed this pack.

Plus the Carew card was inserted, look at the grain/corner on left of the top card compared to the next few. The Carew card is a different size LOL

Corner folds on both 70 and 73 cello are very poorly put together, no question.

Hey, just because I said you really know a lot about unopened doesn't mean I understand why you guys like it and pay the prices you do for unopened material, LOL!

I didn't realize they made Topps Super's in 1968. Those round corners on the '68 cello sure make them look like Supers. image

So the idea is that they purchase a 76 rack (or similar year), remove the contents then replace with an early 70s era header and appropriate assortment of commons for the year they are fabricating? I had always wondered where the resealers were getting their empty racks from.

In the end when there is money involved some people are willing to do anything. Thanks for pointing out the issue with the rack and keeping us all better informed.
