1971 Kelloggs go nuts

What happen to 1971 Kelloggs over the weekend? An unopened Clemente went for $360 on e-bay (that's double what the last one went for a couple of months ago). And a common (Wayne Simpson) sold for $102 in PSA-9. I've been charting these prices and I believe the previous high for a common for a PSA=9 was $60. Any ideas?

Guffy, I'm not surprised about the Simpson PSA 9. It's a one of one, and the only one graded! If none others have been submitted, it must be a very condition sensitive card. Maybe that price will turn out to be cheap.

The unopened Clemente price seems ridiculous. If it grades a 9 the card is only worth $150-200 so the buyer would take a hit. The chances of it being a 10 are extremely low. The only other reason it could have sold so high is some collectors put together complete sets of these cards in their unopened form. Perhaps that deserves a little premium, but overall the price paid was high.

This is interesting. I'm selling a few 1972 Kellogg's cards on eBay that are 1/2 Pop in 9 and I'm not even getting a nibble. The '71 Set has always had a reputation of being scarce, but I could argue that '72 Master Set (including the 21 variations) is tougher (in my opinion). I've been looking for some of the variations for years and can't find many.
