UPDATED: Dusted off my toned dollar book that I haven't opened in 8 years (a small selection of firs

I started building a toned dollar book some time ago. Some I bought raw (like the 3 1878 matching dollars, which I bought from a set about 10 years ago), but most were in slabs that were cracked out.

I opened the book to add the first new addition in about 8 years. I have 23 pieces in the book so far, Morgan, Peace and Ike. After re-falling in love with them again, I decided to image them for the first time, to share, so here are the first 8.

Nice coins. I really like the 3 matching 1878's. I have purchased many Morgans with similar toning raw.
I assume there was a common storage method that produce that toning.

I LOVE your toners and think having a "toner" album is a great idea. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I hope that all of us on this forum are "toning" as well........

Nice coins, and nice images.. it sure is a lot easier to take pictures of raw coins than slabbed ones, isn't it?

Thank you all for your feedback, especially about the 1880. It's an amazing coin, really. Believe me it was hard to spend $XXX on each coin and then crack it to put it into a book, but after the first few it got easier image

Each row of 3 coins is a matched row so it took some time to fill up 2 pages (9 coins on each page, 3 rows of 3). The pictures below were random coins I lifted out of the book (other than the 1878 coins, that's a whole row of 3). I was half way done with the third page, but added a new coin last night that I had sitting around for a while, and ironically just last night I won a nice Peace dollar MS64 CAC that I will crack and add to the set once I receive it.

I'll post another set of photos next weekend...busy work week this week.

PS. And yeh, it is way easier to take photos of raw coins...but I'm so paranoid I'll damage one that the anxiety makes me shake image

    Wow -- great looking coins.

My question to you is -- how in the world could you resist not peeking at those coins for 8 years? I couldn't do it; not even close.

    Guilty as charged, Dave...

I admit that slabs and registry sets have altered my collecting habits (as I think most would sympathize with that). I loved completing a Buffalo nickel book with my daughter, and an IHC book with my son, and working on my toned dollars book (really challenging)...and then got caught up by the darn Registry Set bug (again), which started to suck all my $$ and time...

I had a nicely toned Peace dollar I decided not to get slabbed (posted pics here before), went to add it to the book, and re-fell back in love with the coins that sat on a shelf in a book for many years. But now that I've taken the book out and looked at them, I think it's time I rekindle my interest in this project image

So do you know how much they've changed, if at all, over the past 8 years? Are the Morgans all 78-S?

Me too. Real nice coin, toned in an intersting way. All of them are nice coins, but that 1880 sticks out for me.

I like the Ike. What was the grade before you cracked that one out (if it was one that you cracked out)?

These were mainly at least 8-14 year old holders, and some a bit older. I think the IKE was a PCGS 64. I don't know much about Ikes but I've a few dozen in hand and to my inexperienced Ike eye it seemed like it was nice for the grade, in 64/65 grades they were pretty baggy but this one seemed less so (and I know the toning hides a lot of hits but still it looked OK).

BTW, I'm overwhelmed with how many responses I've gotten to this thread, I though it would just die after a few people looked at the photos, but thank you for keeping it alive image

Lots of nice looking coins! Since you hadn't looked at them for 8 years, are they all stable in color? I have no reason to believe they wouldn't be, but if it was me I would double check.

I remember that at one time this is what collecting was all about. Your 1922 Peace Dollar is truly Superb Art Deco toning. Too bad there is no grading scale for toning. I think that toning is a much greater differentiator than is absolute grade. And if you coolect them RAW, the toning may just improve........

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your toners.

Thank you...humbled by everyone's kind feedback. Only a small handful left to share. Odd how it can take so long to assemble and so quick to image.

And while on the imaging topic, some have asked me to image their coins. I don't have a lot of time but I love the side hobby so I've enlisted the aid of my teenage son and daughter. We've broken up the process, it's somethig for us to do together (as a dad of two teenagers I'll take any together time I am afforded), and they make some side money to pay for gas and clothes and food and yada yada, whatever teenagers spend their $$ on.

Anyhow got up early so I can start wrapping presents and not wait for the last minute...too late I guess image

    Happy Holidays!!

Cracked (PC 64), imaged and ready to add to my book...

But now I'm having second thoughts, it's almost too nice, or is there such a thing? I have 5 more to crack (Peace and Morgan), but the 6 of them that I've acquired over the past 6 months are so nice that for some reason I'm having second thoughts tonight. There is actually a 7th and 8th I'm selling because they don't really match the other coins in the book, but the 6 I've set aside do, anyhow...just looking for some encouragement to keep cracking/adding until all the spots are filled.

PS. Will image all of them in this nice faux True View style image
