I've been informed by Mike Sturgeon, (dbemike) that Great Collections is auctioning a NGC PF66RB 1909VDB Matte Proof Lincoln cent on Sunday, January 4, 2015. $40K is an awful lot to spend on an essentially RAW coin.

Nobody bid $40k for a 1909VDB PR66RB in an NGC holder. It is interesting to me that when I priced the 53 09VDB MPL's hoard in another thread, I used the ASSUMPTION that we should value all the NGC holdered coins at one grade lower than the PCGS price guide. Well, the PCGS price guide values a PCGS holdered 1909VDB PR65RB at $40k. Could it be that Great Collections uses the same assumptions when valuing NGC coins for their auctions? Seriously, I wouldn't doubt that potential buyers of this coin will wait until the hoard issue gets settled before looking seriously to purchase. I note that Rick Snow also has had one for sale at his site for awhile although it is currently "on hold". Steve

I didn't see any prices for PCGS PR65RB, so I would have through half the PR66RB was appropriate. So $28K with the fees would have been an appropriate starting point to me.

Now that the auction is over, I will say that I am suspicious of the color. This is a coin you just have to see in hand. Too much money at stake for a copper in an NGC holder.
