45-Day Poppage: Mixed Bag (PICS ADDED)

These just popped today. I'm stoked about a few of them (like the '78 Dorsett and '81 Gastineau) that I'd picked up from a local dealer after spending about four hours digging through boxes of singles.

Wow, there are some great Payton cards in that sub!
  • Thanks. I'm digging the '83 and was pleasantly surprised by the '77. I was expecting an 8.

Thanks! I was super stoked about that one. I examined it very closely at the card shop and felt it had a real shot at a 10, only to notice some very slight loss of surface gloss once I got it home. I'm still thrilled since I bought it for less than $30.

Thats awesome! Don't be afraid to try a review for a 10 if you think it has a shot. Big $$.

Nice sub. That Gastineau may bring some good change if you are selling it. Scan that Campbell rookie when it arrives.

    Thanks,

I'm trying to decide about the Gastineau. It's the surprise gem of the lot, but I've got it in my head that I'm going to attempt to compile PSA 10 rookie cards of the four members of the New York Sack Exchange. The Abdul and Lyons are easy enough, but the Klecko could set me back some coin if I don't somehow luck out and find a gorgeous raw copy with a shot at a 10.

Yeah, I'll scan the Campbell when it gets here.

You mentioned the Gastineau was the surprise gem in the group. Did you say that because of the fisheye under the "M"?

I'm not sure. It was in one of many boxes of singles they had on their counter.

Those PA HS cards are really cool. I'd never seen them before. What's the story with them? Are they rare? Valuable?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

The early ones are hard to come by in good condition and nearly impossible in graded condition. The Harrison is a pop 2 with no 10s and the Martin is a pop 1 (no qualifiers) with no 10s.

Set Description From Beckett Football Card Price Guide 29th Edition:

This 36-card standard-size high school football set was issued to commemorate the Big 33 Football Classic, an annual high school football game begun in 1957 and featuring Pennsylvania versus Maryland for the past seven games. The fronts feature posed black and white player photos enclosed by a white border. State name appears at the top of card while player name, number, and position appear in white reversed-out letting in black. The Big 33 logo and The Super Bowl of High School Football appear in same reversed-out fashion at bottom. The backs feature player's biographical information enclosed within a thick black border. The key cards in this set feature Marvin Harrison, Curtis Martin, and Ray Zellars.

Thanks for the info., Mike. Were they issued in 1991 or later to commemorate the 1991 game?
