Any good literature for a youngster getting interested in collecting?

Back in my youth, there were a number of great things like baseball card news, baseball cards magazine and even the SCD was a mighty thick paper, basically because the internet was not around yet!

My son is starting to get interested in collecting more as he is getting a bit older. Any suggestions/advise on good sources of information for him to read and learn more about the hobby?

From a purely fun standpoint, I recommend a kids novel called The Trading Game. I enjoyed it as a boy and both my sons have read it this year and enjoyed it.

May I suggest a visit to your local library. Mine has many books on cards-Beckets price guides, Baseball HOF books,Collectible/hobby guides,The large book picturing all of the TOPPS BB cards. Weekly "COIN WORLD" paper had many articles on the BB HOF coins. Also read a good book on the Honus Wagner tobacco card that my library had. Much history there as well. As stated above a visit to the local shows/shops should offer some pointers/guidance as well. Also buy some cheap wax boxes to break open and have him start building a set so he can experience the chase and satisfaction of completing a set,albeit it won't be a valuable set, but collecting is not all about value, it's supposed to be fun too. Old auction catalogs. Great write-ups in there, lots of sports history, and fantastic photos. Just screen them before - I think half of them have the Marilyn Monroe nude calendar from the 50's for sale.

If he likes Topps cards from the 50s-early 80s, the big "Topps Baseball Cards, The Complete Picture Collection" is so much fun to look through.
