A Couple of NEWPS- Hannover and Venice

First up a difficult piece in high grade, the 1802 A Venice 1 1/2 Lira. I don't know the mintage but these may be one of the largest billion pieces made in the period, 32mm and only 25% silver. Perhaps this led to them being melted later or simply worn out, but they are tough, this is the only mint state piece graded at NGC. I'm surprised one of the Hapsburg collectors didn't steal this away from me in the auction as it's Francis II from the Austrian Occupation period.

I also picked up a very nice Hannoverian horse, the 1827 16 Gute Groschen are very common coins, but for some reason they just don't come in high grade very often, this one is a 64 and it's tied with 2 others for highest grade at NGC.

Venice did mint some lovely coins. I have been tempted, but have resisted so far.
Your Hannoverian horse may motivate me to do something unwise, at least if I want to deplete my budget for the NYINC. Resist, resist. <resistance is futile>

Very nice example of the 1 1/2 lire; these never seem to come along is any sort of grade and this is a honey. And, who doesn't like the charging horse? Congrats on a couple of fine catches.

Nice Hannover piece, and you got it for a decent price -- the most recent 1826 one on CRO in a PCGS 64+ holder sold at $795...I thought that price was very aggressive. $265 is much more reasonable for a very popular design image

Thanks, I thought both were very reasonably priced. The weekly auctions usually don't have very high grade stuff but sometimes a couple get slipped in and people don't look at them. To be honest I think if the Venice 1 1/2 Lira had been in something like the NYINC sale it would have made a few hundred more than it sold for. There would have been more specialists who recognized it for it's scarcity and the lack of unc specimens to buy, even raw. I think the World Coin price guide is $500 in MS60, but there are none available at that price, and even raw I have not seen any over the past 1 1/2 years that I thought would grade uncirculated.

The Hannover piece is ex-Pittman also, I don't pay more for pedigree but it's always interesting to me.

I don't really compare anything I buy to CRO prices, they get some really excellent coins, but always priced at maximum retail or new record prices. And I don't blame him, his model is to offer really great coins at whatever the market will support, they don't carry average coins at average prices.
