Need help advising a friend

A friend recently asked me to look through some cards he was getting rid of to clear space in their house. Three of his binders had complete sets of 1974, 1975, and 1976 Topps baseball. I have not been active in the hobby for 6+ years so I am looking for some help in advising him. Overall the cards are in EXMT to NM condition. I have attached photos of some of the stars below. Should I advise to sell as sets or grade some of the stars and sell the rest as near complete sets? I have not graded any cards since the new .5 scale has been in effect so I don't know what the cards below would grade. Any help or advice would be appreciated. He doesn't really want to do a lot of work to dispose of the cards.

PS...When his wife brought the cards to my wife she said "If we could get $50 for them I would be happy!"

+1, I would sell as complete sets.
  • Just sell as complete sets. The wife will be pleased the final price will be much more than $50.

Tell her I'll give her $50.00 ... plus she can keep any card she wants! LOL

Best of luck ... I agree selling as complete sets is the way to go ... also the least amount of work ... and unless there are some nice Gem Mint cards scattered in those sets ... you won't be giving up too much money.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

This sums it up. I will offer $51image The wife should be pleasantly surprised at the return on these cards. I am not a huge 70's baseball expert but wouldn't the Schmidt command >$50 on its own?

I'm sure you can get a pretty good sale here on BST or ok eBay. Good luck.

That 73 Schmidt should get at least $75 by itself. I just paid $75 for one very much like it raw.

Thanks for all the advice. When my wife quoted my friend's wife I almost pulled out two twenties and a ten. Luckily I have a very long very long honest streak in me. I did a quick search of ebay sales to get an idea of reasonable prices based on conditions from EX to NM with roughly an equal distribution of the conditions and got the following results:
    1974 Topps $150 to $250
    1975 Topps $250 to $375
    1976 Topps $150 to $300

    Would these be about right?
