Purchased card, came with cracked slab. Opinions

I purchased a card from ebay and it arrived with the bottom right corner of the slab cracked, about 1.5 inches across.
I messaged the seller telling him this and he replied "it was not like that when it left have u informed your postmaster?"

My first question is who is responsible for this?

Before reading on, please answer the first part.

So I go back and take a better look at the scan......it was already cracked.

I do want to keep the card....but considering the response from the seller.......

Thanks

Shipping claims must be made be the shipper, if he is going to claim it was damaged, I hope he insured it.

I see the crack too. Since he claimed it happened in the mail, you can use that as justification to get your refund. However, you gotta decide first if you want to keep it.

It is the seller's responsibility to get the item to you safe and sound.

You could send it back (SNAD) and eBay will force the seller to refund your money.

I guess you need to decide if you want to keep it or not, as that card rarely comes up for sale. Personally, I think the centering (I measure t/b ... near the right side, at 43/57) for a "10", is terrible. If you are OK with the card, then just send it to PSA for a re-holder next time you send in cards. Not worth your time for a few bucks.

    GOOD LUCK!

I would send it back for refund. Seller might have swapped out the card.

Definitely return it via eBay SNAD. Cease all communication with the seller and immediately open a case against him.

It is the seller's responsibility to show the crack and mention it in their listing. I haven't looked at the listing, but I'm guessing he didn't show a clear picture of the crack and/or mention it in the description.

Most important thing is to stop communication with the seller.

It is sad, but I agree.

Whenever a seller is unable or unwilling to resolve (the crack IS their fault, they didn't ship it correctly) you should go the way of SNAD and force it through e-bay. Everything in the above statement is spot on.

Make sure to do it via eBay and use the label they provide you. If you send it back to the seller without eBay's approval you could be out of luck.

Regardless of the crack, that card's not worth 10 money with that centering imo. I think they missed the call on it...but that said, I agree with Doug (Dboneesq)'s opinion above. Football cards aren't my thing but I hear Martin's a tough get in slabbed 10. If you got it at a good price then you might consider keeping it to see if another comes on the market down the line, then reholder and offer yours for sale later.

There was only 1 other that sold earlier this year (per VCP). OP paid about the same price, but the centering on the other was nicer.

Happened to me with a 1955 Topps Jackie Robinson. Seller was very accommodating and accepted a return no questions asked.

I've only had one item that got a crack in the slab during transit before it reached my recipient so far. He still wanted the card, so we worked it out where I sent him a smaller, partial refund to cover the costs associated with it getting reholdered ($5 for reholder plus a couple bucks for shipping, and he threw it in with a larger order he was sending). That was a good resolution in that situation. Not sure how reasonable the guy you're working with is, but thought I'd suggest something like that for the sake of conversation.

Happened to me once as a seller. I sent the card in a padded mailer. Buyer said it was cracked upon arrival. I apologized, told him to keep the card and issued a full refund, including shipping. Sometimes one needs to do this to keep customers happy.

How tough is this card to find? if it were me, i'd probably just live with the crack or if it really bothered me, just send it in to psa for reholder.
