Official Fishing Lures?

OK, now that Merc collectors are seeing the humor in referring to their little pieces of silver as fishing lures, I have a question. Are all dimes fishing lures, or just the Mercs? Everything from Seated to Roosevelts have the same diameter, so I am assuming that they could all be used. Of course, the clads might not be as shiny and might not work. And then, what about the Draped Bust and Capped Bust pieces. They are slightly larger, but might work as well?

Most Seated Dimes would be circulated and lackluster, and prohibitively expensive if not. Roosevelt's portrait does not a variety of angles to reflect light as the Mercury portrait does.

So, get a roll of BU Mercs and a drill, and get fishin'!

All dimes would certainly work. I mean if you were fishin in the river, it might take like a whole typeset of them to keep you on bottomimageimage But then for regular pond fishin, maybe just one of any designimage Unless of course it was very deep, then it might take a few extras. It's ok though, there are plenty of themimageimageimage I think the slabs would work as bobbbers also.........

I would assume that Spooly uses circulated Mercs, and many of them are lackluster as well.

Circulated ones are the most economical to use and since you are drilling holes in them it wont hurt to buff and whizz them to a nice bright shine. image

whizz them to a nice bright shine

Sure, if you want to catch some bottom-feeding sucker. Discriminating game fish prefer original mint brilliance.

You lower 48 guys know nothing about fishing.image

Take it from an Alaska guy. You have to use PR68 Mercs only. Preferably blast white. Can keep the piece in the holder. Drill 2 holes, in the top and bottom of the holder. Tie the line through the top hole and add weight. Put a nice big hook through the bottom hole. Then go pound on those 10lb silvers.image

What happens if the fish are not coin collectors? Could you then use toasted marshmellows?

I also discover that if you take them out of the slab they work better. The one I used in an ACG slabbed only caught suckers. I had better luck with the PCGS slabbed ones, but all the fish I caught on them were registered, dying species, so I had to throw them back, and they were overpriced too.

Greg I know you guys got those nice sized salmon to go after up where you are. All I gots is some little old trout that is stocked by the DEP. This year has been bad not one I caught has been over 10 inches, so this will do just fine for me.

    Tad,

Spooly swears that he uses Mercs for lures, and that's why he coined the nickname. Maybe he'll take a photo of one of his real ones.

The Merc looks to be a Little too Small for the Smallmouth Bass Fishing that I do on the Columbia River here in the North West. But That Ike is Just The Ticket and Almost Colored Correctly. It would Work somewhat Better if a Treble Hook was Hung off from it instead of the Single Hook.

Small Mouth Bass for Me not the Pretty Steelhead. You are Correct on the Single Hook for the Steelies I believe. Crimped Barb also isn't it.

Out here on the West Coast ,we dont catch em we just cook em and eat em. That way we dont have to deal with icky worms and other disgusting and horrible things you fishermen and fisherladies just love to do.
