Has anyone ever done a pop rip?!?!

Back in August I thought I missed my 15 card sub since I renewed my membership at the National, though my membership ended in November of this year (see this thread):
LINK

Turns out your renewal ends within 12 months of when your initial membership ends, not when you renew, so I was still able to mail in my submissions. (I dunno if that makes sense, I've been drinking at the staff Christmas Party)

I was still able to send in my cards and get them graded. Since the turnaround is pretty quick on the 15 CC I wanted to essentially rip my pop without checking the grades online. This was REALLY a trial of my heart VS my patience. I wanted you to all follow along, since I've never done any exciting rips. I didn't have any vintage cards to sub, but I was pretty excited about submitting the cards I had, and hopefully ya'll will get a kick out of this endeavor. Please keep in mind for around 24 hours after posting these that photobucket is terrible. Enjoy!

Note: I just got my computer rehauled, and this is the first time I tried using the scanner, which is apparently no longer inline with my laptop...It's getting late so I didn't want to recalibrate everything so all pics are from my phone..... Guh. Again, I'm drunk, but too excited to put this off.

Good luck but I would recommend blurring or covering up your home address on the PSA box.

Got these next two from a friend who's losing his visison. He gave them to me since he can no longer enjoy collecting, but wanted me to send them in, hoping they'd come out as high grades. Not bad, but not as high as I'd hoped.

Another let down. I'm still learning but I thought one of these three would hit. Ouch.

I know the 86's are tough, but I love this set, and I had to know how my eye would fair. Turns out not great. Still had to send in one to find out for sure. Ouch.

Maybe a touch off right to left? Again still learning, I thought Bo was good to go.

Maybe I coulda sent in another card, but checking eBay in advance it seemed like hitting a 10 on this one had a good return, and it seemed the best option of my stack of possible subs. Just missed. If anyone can tell me why, lemme know. Again, still learning.

Really wanted this one to hit. Turkey Reds are really tough, but thought I could hit on this one. Only 3 higher (ha!)

Threw this one in at the end hoping it would hit. I'm a big Nolan fan, and going over this and a few others I considered I went with one of my favorites that I thought could hit over a few others I thought could get a 10. Win some lose some.

This one stings a bit. I'll resubmit down the road, but like those Thomas cards I got this one from my buddy who is losing his vision and wanted me to enjoy it. It was a prize of his collection, and we both thought it would grade high. He'd wanted to get it graded for awhile now, but never sent it in. Hopefully next time it gets a grade. Willing to take opinions on it if anyone wants to chime in (I know the labels are covering up half the card), just wondering about centering, etc, thanks.

My last sub I hit one 10 on a Greg Maddux 87 Tiffany. This sub, I hit two 10's so I feel I'm getting better. Woulda liked to get higher on the Sandberg, and really wanted any grade on the Henderson, but I can try resubbing that down the road. All and all I'm happy. I know I at least broke even and compared to some previous subs my eye is getting better. I'm not renewing for this year, but next time I submit I think my eye will be even better.

In conclusion, I hope this was a fun thread for you guys. Happy Holidays!

Thanks for sharing your scans with us! I really enjoyed your post and I think more members should do the "pop rip" and show off their hits and misses.

  • I did this once years ago when I was sending subs to Beckett. I don't remember whether it was a good sub or not but there was a lot of suspense.
It's fun to do but requires a great deal of patience.

Sounds like it could be fun. I will try to do this with my cc renewal sub and the current group sub I'm involved with.
