Boy, Jeff sure does sell some great cameo proofs! Anyone know if he sold that 42 Jeff in 66Cam, yet?
Your lincoln might be worth $10,000 to the right buyer...you just have to find him/her! I know there are very few proofs from 38-42 with the cameo designation, but for a while, I don't think PCGS designated them with Cam/Dcam for those years, even if they had nicely contrasted surfaces. Am I right here? So, I think many coins slabbed over the years that have contrast, might end up getting re-submitted now that PCGS will give out the Cam/Dcam designation, so the pops may start to rise. I could be wrong...it happens often enough that I am getting used to it. Nevertheless, the minting process was different back then, so cameo proof coins from that era will always be a rarity, so your coin surely hold great value...I just don't know how much! image

Don: The PR64CAM coin, from the scan, was an exceptional quality cameo coin. Very impressive coin. Let's assume the PR65CAM might command around $2000-$2250 if sold unless it is "PQ" like the PR64 coin probably was and then, perhaps, a bit more. As for the PR66CAM coin, I will not comment on what I believe to be the value as that wouldn't be right. But, no question, the coin is for a special collector. Time to set it loose at auction? • Don,

Well I saw the coin last year and certainly think it is an excellent coin. I think that is has a very good shot at the 5 figure price (or more). I did not think you were looking to sell, but if you do, perhaps you could try the BS&T boards first.

I looked at the scan of this PR64CAM and I wonder if it is a true scan picture of the coin. The coloring of the slab and the deep cameo appearance on the coin plus the "only" 64 grade by PCGS makes me wonder about the scan. I say all this after having downloaded another picture of a coin off the internet and then using some picture contrast, brightness, etc. tools on my computer to enhance the image. Anyone have any experience in this area? Steve

Unless I was chasing the "point" or yours looked better by far (!) I'd have to go for this $1,100.00 MS64CAM then spend another nine grand to buy yours.

The guy who bought this has been buying up every MS67RD (only one of each) PCGS and NGC lincoln that shows up. I sent an email to him telling him to join the boards, so maybe he will post to this thread.

When he replied he didn't even know about the registry, so I do not know if he would pay $10K for Merz's coin.

There is also another factor to consider with the coin. If memory serves me right, Merz astutely plucked the coin out of a major auction for around $1000 or so (more or less) a year or so ago. While cameos have certainly heated up in the past year, I do not believe many folks would believe the "heat" to have resulted in a 10 fold jump in such a short time. In other words, there is a "history" on the coin. My comment is not directed at what the coin is really worth, it is simply a comment on what many collectors would perceive the coin to be worth given its price history. image Wondercoin

The buyer is going to be majorly disappointed with that coin when it arrives - that picture's been messed with big time. Check out the seller's Franklin half cameos on ebay - same touchup on the pictures!
  • After watching the results of the 36 Cameo sell in February to DHRC, I have no doubts that this 37 is worth every nickel of the 10K.

I would like to thank you all for your comments.I have been in touch through PM's and E-mails with a few of the Lincoln Proof collectors.I also have asked Wayne Herndons assistance, one of the top Lincoln collectors and dealers in the country. He will post a scan on his web site as well as in his newsletter.I plan on asking him to post it also to the BST Board with a scan.In the event it doesn't sell before 06/15/02,he is going to contact a person at Heritage for their Signature Auction at the ANA Coin Show in NYC.If it does go to Heritages Auction it will have a reserve price.I'd rather it go to one of the Collectors from this forum, but I won't give it away.I am willing to negotiate a deal of some kind.I still would have to replace it with a 1937 PR66 RD Lincoln to help complete my Registry Set.Which is something that I really want to do.The proceeds of the sale would allow me to purchase the 1936 PR65 RD Satin that I also need.I hope this clears up some of the points raised here.

Try scanning them with a black background. It will bring out the cameo effect even more.image
