    How did this go well???

The diggers did not get the coins.
The property owner did not get the coins.
The pawn broker did not get the coins.

The Gov't got and will keep the coins.

    What a sad story.

Bet the workers don't make this mistake again. And another win for the cultural preservationists! I'm sure these will go on display soon in a filing cabinet in a dusty basement somewhere (unless they mysteriously disappear of course). And you see why the first stop of the finders was a pawn shop and why the "illegal" antiquities trade is doing so well despite the good intentions (so they say) of governments and some academics who think private collecting is illegitimate.

Seriously, it demonstrates the wisdom of the treasure trove approach in the UK and elsewhere. Find gets documented, museums/institutions get 1st shot at a fair price and the finder/property owner gets rewarded. Win-win all around. Way too sensible.
