NEWP Men in Fancy Hats Series: Bactria

So I've been dabbling in Greek.

I picked up this little Obol from Eukratides I this week. I am very pleased with the simple design on such a small coin. There is not much in terms of reference material that I can easily access (I seriously have no idea what to do on Forum). So any guidance would be helpful.

This coin looks much better in hand, but I wanted to get it photographed and labeled before I lost some of the pertinent information. Retakes will happen at some point when I have ample daylight and a better setup. For now this will have to do.

I made several comments about references on your thread about your nifty parthian coin. I did a quick search on CNG's archives and came up with a couple similar to yours. This coin comes with both a helmeted bust and a diademed one. Here's one of the helmeted ones:

BTW, a lot of Bactrian/Indo Greek material of all sizes and metals has been faked during the last 10 years or so, some pretty good and some wretched, and bad material shows up on ebay all the time. I'm certainly more cautious than when I first got started but so long as you got this coin from a reliable dealer you should be fine. Hope the link gives you a start...

PS, here's the link to the search I did BTW: search

More info is provided when you click on each individual entry in the listing. Not as good as a catalogue, but pretty handy for a quick search. Good luck!

They surely did like them some hats back in the day.
  • Those ancient pith helmets couldn't have been very comfortable. Better than a Corinthian helmet though. Can you imagine wearing one of those?!

Well I bought this coin on Vcoins from a dealer that I feel is reputable and with a large presence there and on E. I also purchased my Sassanian and Parthian from him and I am happy with all of the coins individually and as a group. I made what I felt was a reasonable investment to get started and didn't go nuts and buy everything on first impulse. I appreciate the CNG stuff again as I don't go there really. I will start using the site more often because it is easy to work with from my now limited experience.

Good to hear! VCoins does a decent job of policing their dealers so I'm sure you're fine then.
