Nah, I don't mind.
Those scratches don't look too bad, and it's possible they weren't done intentionally and just occurred in circulation. I have more issues with graffiti (names, letters, dates, etc carved into coins) where someone deliberately damaged the coin.

It's Laura's fault

I didn't even notice until reading your post. I was too distracted by the lines under/over LIBERTY.
Any of you guys and gals notice how you get so accustomed to grading a coin (or token ...) that you forget how to step back and enjoy the features?
I need to re-learn how to really "look" at a coin before picking it apart.

punches or dies have to be made in "reverse impression" to produce proper image on pieces being produced
die makers are only human
some suffer monday mornings or last nights hangovers
surely no intention
way cool though that the die wasn't reworked and examples were struck and released
could of even been early marketing...something to rise word of mouth about

<< <i>Given the nature of the token's message perhaps the backwards N represents nihilism -- the rejection/negation of moral principles or a meaningless existence, as is sometimes seen on crucifixes.

twas thinking the same thing too might actually had been been behind it
it is a political token
Or not. Just guessing.

Also, many cemetery headstones from the 1700-1800s have backwards N letters, and occasionally other letters and dates backwards.

<< <i>Only the N in United States is backwards, not those on the reverse. And since it's an anti-slavery HT token the nihilism reference, if that's what it is, refers to the nation's tolerance for slavery which treats people as property with lives of no significance.
Or not. Just guessing.

Interesting Lance. I thought right away upon seeing the backwards N that it was done deliberately not accidentally. To bring attention to this timely defect in the word itself.
