Very cool! Anyone know the story of the other two pieces? E.g., grade, provenance chain, etc.?

How does one get a hater to stop hating?

    Neat.
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

Not much about them in the auction description except that the other examples sold in 2006 and 2008, with the suggestion that one was superior and the other inferior in condition to this specimen.

Hands-down the coolest shipwreck coin I've ever seen.

I bet the boys at NGC spent more than 5-7 seconds grading her image

Nice looking coin. I was just about to say I haven't seen one of those before and then read that there's only 3 know. That'll explain why! image

Any ideas on how these escaped salt-water damage?

They didn't have ziplock bags in 1538? image

Overall, there were many high-grade 4 Reales from this wreck.

In fact, some of them have graded as high as MS63!

Maybe the 4R and these three 8R were buried underneath all the other 8R pieces, which suffered severe salt-water damage and decay but shielded/preserved those underneath? If they were sitting in a treasure chest of sorts?

My understanding is if silver coins are laying with a lot of iron the iron will oxidize first protecting the silver.

So, stupid question, but how on earth do you read the dates off of these things? I understand this coin is probably a unique type (what do I know), but a lot of other early 8 reales I've seen I could not tell the date of even with a gun at my head. Is there anywhere in specific I'm supposed to look to read the dates?

early Mexican cobs have no date, the assayer mark will give an approx. date , in this case the capital R between the pillars stands for Francisco del Rincon,
who was in office between 1536 - 1538.
