My 1st reaction is no, but it could be a 70's or 80's type sig

Same as my reaction, but I am not too familiar with his early auto.

I got this one years ago from a good dealer who guarantees autos for life.

Back then a cut like this went for 10 bucks. Some say it's his wife's sig? Don't know.

But, his early mid-career autos seem to look more like Willie Mop. Real early it looked more like the one in the 53T card:

I know squat about authenticating an auto - I'm just putting up what I have.

    Personally, I vote no good.

If you look closely at his first name, it appears the first "i" is formed like an "x" (the "W" goes straight into the first "l").

  • Could be because he was trying to fit it over his photo. It's not so far off. Ask the seller for a PSA quick opinion. See how confident he is in it

Hey Doug - I'm pretty far from an auto expert, but I'll give you my two cents. My first thought was real. I had him auto my glove, in person in 1980, and this actually seems closer to the auto I remember from wearing that glove for 7 years than the one I have hanging in my card room that is authenticated and was given to me a few years ago.

Sounds like the general opinion is no good, and there may be other tell tale signs that confirm that, but u will say that this does look similar to the in-person auto I got in 80...for whatever that's worth.

  • Doug - Willie signed for me in person in Scottsdale, AZ in 1986 and your card does not look off from that signature. I agree it looks different from Stone's examples and guess signatures do evolve but what you have matches mine fairly well. I hope all proves out for you.

Here's his auto from around 72-74 based on the other signers around him in the album. The sig is definitely not from that era, but could be a newer variation.

I have a ball I bought about 10 years ago with a very similar sig. About 3 years ago, at the White Plains show, I brought it to PSA to have it verified. It passed the test.
  • I have a ball signed by WM that I obtained personally in 1985 and it looks very similar to that auto. I think it's good.

Well ... I'll find out one day if it's good. I pulled the trigger and purchased a larger lot of autographed cards, the Mays being the most expensive in the lot (hopefully).

Thanks again for all your opinions.
