Seated Liberty Quarter Questions

1996 ASE sold

One coin my father has is a rare 1842 O Seated Liberty Quarter with small date in VF condition? It has Average wear. I've done some searching on it but can't ever get too much info. I know he bought it at least 8-10 years ago. id like to get some opinions on a price for it. Originally a local guy graded it as Xf said its worth around 300$. Once I looked over it im not sure if I could consider it a XF

An 1842-O small date quarter in EF-Au is worth way, way more than $200 - $300. Check PCGS's auction price history. Note also that if it is cleaned, it won't be worth as much as a nice one in a PCGS graded holder.

The pics on most of those aren't good enough for a great evaluation of them. You need pics of both sides.

The 1996 silver eagle does show enough clues on the condition.

I see them on ebay hitting in the 38-43 range.

Yours has severe spotting in the picture. I'd call it low quality and wonder what price it would bring on ebay.

I suggest you check "sold listings" on ebay and decide on prices that way. No one here will value your coin sight unseen.

Ok thanks I will check the auction history. And that's good to know I'll have to talk to my dad and take pics of the coin

Matt, Concerning your ASE, even though 96 is the lowest year mintage wise, still 3.5 million examples is a lot. Most of those are high grade white uncirculated. No demand for AU level ASE, therefore no
buyers for your coin. Always worth an ounce of silver though. FWIW

There is a local b+m that has circulated eagles in a box...Ive bought 1996's from the box, nothing wrong but a little rub, paid just over spot.
There may be some folks on ebay who will pay more...I guess if you were looking for one, you'd pay more, I don't know...image

Ok yea I haven't been collecting coins that long so it's taking me awhile to get the hang of things, I just remember seeing a few 1996s going for around or just over 100$ On ebay only a couple weeks ago. They might have been uncirculated, and when I showed that to an antique guy he agreed mine is the same as the ebay listing and to ask 70$ for my coin. But I wouldn't count on his word because he was considering my coin uncirculated I beleive
  • I just had the ASE sell on usacoinbook for 42$ fyi thanks for all the quick responses

One coin my father has is a rare 1842 O Seated Liberty Quarter with small date in EF-AU condition, It has Little to no wear. I've done a lot of searching on it but can't ever get to much info. I know he bought it at least 8-10 years ago. It seems like the coins are going for around 200-300$ on average in EF-AU. ill have to get some pics of it id like to get some opinions on a price for it. >>

Even 10 years ago the 1842-o SD in EF+ would have been worth $4,000-$6,000 or more. These days even a Good 04 is worth $500-$700 depending on which price guide. Forget CDN (grey sheet) which is quite low on this date in some grades. I think they still show it at $225 in Good. Ensure you have the "small date" as over the years I've seen more incorrectly attributed 42-0 SD's than I have the real thing. A very difficult coin to find in problem free XF-AU. Many (or even most) have weak strikes and appear a lower grade than they actually are.

Hopefully you will be able to zoom in on the pics if not I'll have to resize them. After looking at it I know it's not in as good of condition as I thought. But I'm thinking VF?

xf-au may be a stretch for the quarter, looks like a fine at best with a sizeable scratch on the obverse, probably not going to be worth XF money
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

Sorry yea I was thinking it was a xf-AU but once I checked it out to get the pics I see it isn't. I updated my post
  • Bump any other opinions on grade?

Looks like a Fine-VF coin that might be netted down another grade or more for damage/scratches. Maybe a net VG-Fine? Scratch across Liberty's upper body.....and what appears to be another scratch or die crack along the left side of the shield on the reverse.

From the pic that's presented, I'm thinking it's a VG10. The reverse is better but the obverse details are worn too much IMHO. 50/50 on whether they'll let the scratch slide.
No matter what it's a really nice coin that PCGS has at $1500 at VG10. I hope it's better than a 10. image

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
