New Pickups: 1974 Topps Baseball Rack Packs

As many unopened collectors know, the 1974 Topps baseball rack pack with the blue header card is one of the tougher issues to find. Topps used the blue header card for 1974 only, though I wish they had kept it for subsequent issues, as I like the color and if I were a marketing person working at Topps, I'd propose that the blue header might generate greater appeal for boys looking to spend their 39 cents, lol...GAI once graded a full box of 1974 Topps baseball rack packs using sequential cert #s about 7-8 years ago and these two, one of which has Rod Carew (and Don Baylor) on top, are from that same box. I've been able to acquire a total of 6 racks over the years from that box. I like that Matthews card on top of the other rack as the action shot was taken at Shea Stadium. Since Sy Berger lived in New York at the time, many of the Topps cards from this era feature Shea Stadium as a backdrop.

Congrats. As if your collection needed to get any better Awesome racks. Interesting info on the header cards.
Nice Tim, go ahead and get the whole box!!
Since these came from a box, I'm guessing that
Topps punched the hole in the cellophane. They
also punched the smaller hole in the header card,
right, kind of as a head start for the dealer to be
able to hang them easier?

Steve, if I see any more come up for sale, I will definitely be interested!
John, All of the 74 racks I have, both from this box and others, feature a larger opening in the cellophane near the punch hole. The cross hatch punch hole itself was much more pronounced in 1974 than in later years, particular late 70s, when in some cases, it is barely discernible. I can't say for certain, though, that the racks from this particular run were not hung for sale in a store at some point.
Arthur, if I pull a Mint Winfield RC, then we will be even...

<< <i>Here's another example of the larger opening in the cellophane near the punch hole that you find in rack from the early part of the 1970s, one of my favorites from 1972.

Ok, Tim. Now we are approaching humblebrag status
Just kidding of course. Love seeing the different racks in your collection. Keep the pics coming. Having joined the party late on the unopened side of the hobby I have to live vicariously through collectors like you who have managed to amass these great collections before prices hit the moon.
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
Here's another one of my favorite 74s, sans plastic, with Lefty on top..

Now if I can only get my 1974 basketball box need filled. I do have Steve's commitment to sell me the next nice one for grading he gets.... The price was $59 per pack so you can tell how long I've been waiting. Just something about those 1974's I love!!
