Strange coin for both a SecurePlus and free TrueView

Wouldn't you say? Top is the free TrueView, bottom is the SecurePlus:

I don't understand your question. Is it about the quality difference of the images, or is it about the choice of the coin? If it's the latter, I've seen much less worthy coins Trueviewed or being in a non economy submission with a good quality Secure Plus image. At least, this one is a gold coin. I assume that it looks like the second image in hand.

It's gold but relatively low value. At first blush I was surprised someone spent the Secure plus money for it, but I've just talked myself into it- it's got a tiny overall certified population, maybe they were gunning for a 65 where it would have been 1/2. It also looks nicer to me than the other one of the same grade that represents the type in Coinfacts so I may not have been the only one with a good opinion of it. I suppose that could explain the free TrueView.

It looks much more like the first picture. It has some very nice dusky orange toning to it which is suggestive of originality.

There's one more hypothesis: that the submitter sent it in, along with three or seven other coins, because he had the vouchers from his membership and time was running out. I currently have 8 vouchers and zero coins to submit for the first time in 11 years. Last year too, I've ended up submitting Geo V gem red farthings (worth $30-$50 raw per piece) and only one coin worth ~$350 (that too was an economy coin).

It took me a while to realize that I'm in my "banknote" phase, and I have no desire to buy coins, or no means to buy the ones I really need. I should have stopped the automatic renewal last May, but I forgot about it. I will most certainly not have eight coins to submit with my vouchers that expire at the end of next June. So I have already decided to use them for sending any NGC coins that I have left for crossover, whose value is less than $3K. There's really no need for this crossover, but I can't even give the vouchers to any friends, since they are strictly personal.

Otherwise, your post reveals that you've researched that coin well, but I wonder how you know what it looks like in hand if it's not yours.

Dimitri, sad you are in the banknote phase. I have always loved seeing your coins posted and reading your coin stories. I guess I will look forward to seeing your newps on the currency forum image

Ranshdow, let us know when you receive the coin, which image is truly more accurate. All of my SecurePlus images look very different from their TrueView counterparts. I've found the TrueView generally looks more like the coin in hand.

If the submitter sent this coin in on a voucher, I'd be curious how long they held it before they "flipped" it to an auction house of note 'round these parts.

wonder how you know what it looks like in hand if it's not yours.

Oh, it's mine, and I've had it in-hand for a few days now. I bought it at auction and was startled to find all the FreeBees. image

The coin definitely resembles the TrueView, and not at all the SecurePlus image. They must have very bright lights on the "sniffer", if that's where the SecurePlus photos take place, because it's an amazingly washed out image of this coin. The former image, while a bit flattering, is definitely most accurate- there's levels of tone in this image that I'm not sure I see in hand, but I tend to look at my coins under daylight, flourescent light, and chandelier.
  • INSIDER INFO: When a coin is submitted under World Express (although not Paris Express or Hong Kong Express) ALL of them usually come through the photo department. Not 100% of the time, but usually. So my guess is this coin was just included in a World Express submission, hence the photo. I think Chrissie took this photo.
