I ran a little experiment with not buying tracking on one item and then paying for it on another and this is the result that I got.
For those that doubt, here is the scan of the receipt. You will see on the package to Utica, NY it says PID# and on the other package to Wilmington, Delaware it says USPS Tracking with the money I spent for this service.
Go to USPS.com if you are wanting to run the numbers.......
I just ask for a quarter for every dollar you may save....... LOL

<< <i>Can you see the activity during transit and not just on delivery for the one you didn't pay for? >>
I get all the information that I get for each one, it is identical.

That's odd, I've been told repeatedly that the PID tracking is for internal use only.
<< <i>The PID is their internal tracking system. It cannot be directly accessed by the customer at any time. >>
Go to USPS.com and type in the number that is on my receipt and tell me it is only internal.

I spoke to my main postal worker and she didn't even know.

For everything except Prio it is SUPPOSED to be internal. So this is a problem with their system showing you the information.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>Why pay for it at all? Buy your postage there eBay or Paypal. Not only do you get FREE tracking, but you get a discount on the postage as well. >>
Very true but sometimes I don't have the time.........I'm sure others are in the same boat from time to time.

Confusing at best, but understandable as even the USPS will tell you that they dont know.
Insurance is a scam...nowhere else do you pay extra to guarantee someone does the job you pay them to do. USPS tracking is a scam if the only difference (according to them) is that you can track it, instead of just internally. If not for paypal and the auto refunds without it, it wouldnt even be a necessity IF they did their job right in the first place
<< <i>I stand in line to make sure ALL my packages are scanned, a receipt is received and the packages do not mysteriously vanish without 'some' accountability / proof. >>
It is funny you mention this. I was dropping off a package today and a guy behind me inline was working with the line assistant and had 10 or so items and none of his packages have been scanning in lately. She said they have had some computer issues due to hacking.
I am a slow adopter and I am just fine with using the traditional mailing system.
When they first rolled out the term tracking and not delivery confirmation I once did not buy the extra tracking. I couldn't see the item during transit and was told that the only way you could was to buy the additional tracking.
Both post offices I use have said the same thing so I have continued paying the extra charge.
