Is my Nero too perfectly round?

Considering where I got this coin, it never occurred to me that it could be fake. Showed to a friend who's not familiar with coins and he commented on how amazing it was that the Romans could make such a coin back then. Now I'm worried. The edge is marked XXXII. Thoughts please.

Without question it is a cast copy.

    Yes, it's definitely fake.

Now the only question that remains in my mind is whether it is a "Paduan" (i.e., a Renaissance era copy), or a more modern "tourist" fake.

I fear the latter, but if it's a Paduan, that would be neat.

IMO it's a fake, real one should look like this (note the lettering detail and the hair detail):

I would be concerned about the item's authenticity. As others have said, it appears to be a counterfeit.

You mention "considering where I got this coin..."
Where did you get it? I'd be surprised if a reputable dealer would sell this as an authentic piece, although of course every world/ancient dealer has unknowingly sold fakes at some point, it comes with the business.

Sorry to say it looks like cast fake to me as well.
  • I got it from a dealer I know very well but he doesn't normally handle ancients. Maybe he thought it was an older copy and didn't think I would think it was real. I wouldn't have paid $200 even if it was a "cool" copy.
