O/T: Might be losing my job...

So I just got out of a meeting and found out that we've had a budget shortfall and that they are considering cutting our staff. I was told that they are going to make a big effort to keep me on, but they are not sure they can pay me what we need just to make ends meet. The good news is that if I have to leave that I'll have my job until I can find another one. Still sucks though.

Sorry to hear that. Things are tough these days. Companies know they have the upper hand with the soft job market. Sure is the opposite of what it was like in the late 90s.

Really sorry to hear your news. I think we all take for granted a lot of things in life like health, jobs, kids, etc. until it goes bad. Hang in there and be persistent. Bang on every door.

I am right there with you Guru.....best case, I lose about 40% salary and worst case, I lose my job. I suspect somewhere in the middle is where I will land.

Such is life working for the big Telecom Company (in my case).

Good luck to you and your family.

I lost my job in Nov. 2011 at 55 years old. It took me 5 months of endless searching to find a job in the Boston area. I got a job at a pharmaceutical company in the shipping and receiving dept. I now make 30% more than the last job doing the same kind of work. The benefits are amazing. It's like the kind of job I've always deserved.

In Dec of 2011 I seperated from a telecom company, Avaya. I was fortunate to be ready to retire and was glad to leave. I never realized how important a pension would be to me.
    Good luck Guru!

I have been laid off 3 times. Every company I go to seems to close their doors and relocates to another part of the country. Everytime I got a new job it was a better one. I am in the Environmental Health and Safety area so each company paid me more and I was always closer to my house. First commute was 45 minutes, then 15 minutes now i am 3 miles from home. The only traffic I hit is if the traffic light is red.

  • I've been laid off three times since 2007. Two companies downsized and one completely closed after 87 years in business. While being laid off was stressful every time I've always been able to find an even better job each time (financially) and I've learned a ton about preparing for a rainy day.

    Good luck to you!
