Postal Fraud

Has anyone here ever used USPS Postal Inspection service for fraud?

To keep this short, I had someone not send me merchandise. He lives in another state. He lives too far away for me to go through small claims and the amount is not large enough to retain a lawyer. I dont want to get into any more detail than that.

Im just wondering if anyone has used this service and did it work for you?

I'm sorry to see that this happened. How did you pay? How much money was the transaction? If you mailed a check or money order I would call your local post office and see what they say. I have also heard of people calling the police department where the seller lives and file a report there. Some times the local PD will make a visit to the seller to let them know that a report has been filed. Do you have copies of emails between you and the seller? Good luck

I have the cancelled check. The amount is 365.00. Yes, I have saved all emails.

I have not called their local police department because I highly doubt that they want to waste their time to visit someone on a civil matter.

I guess he's claiming that he sent it?

Do you have documentation that says for him to add delivery confirmation to the package?

The only thing you can do is to file a complaint with the USPS. This way they will investigate. If others have made a claim, too, then that will tip them off that something is fishy with the sender or their staff.

I would make the claim. It's most likely not going to help you recover any money, though.

One in 50 shot, but does he live in VA? I know the local Post Master very well.

Sorry this happened. I've been scammed before, once for $1,000 in 2004 and again for $500 in 2013. Was able to get the $500 back.

    yup

I had a similar matter one time and contacted the local police department. The detective paid the guy a visit and I got my stuff back in a week.
  • Wow hope it works out.
  • Go to your local Police Department and file a case for fraud. It will get forwarded to the other persons local Police. It will be investigated.

The seller will either send the goods or do a refund. Jail time is not worth the risk.

    This is mail fraud.

    Best thing to do.

So he just flat out says he didn't send it, won't send it and tough luck for you? Or is he saying he did send it and you didn't receive it? Seems like a big difference. I would be interested to know a bit more. Good luck.
  • Hopefully things work out for you.

He has never denied owing me a refund. Multiple emails back and forth with him saying he will take care of it. Multiple times he states that he knows he owes me. Multiple times promising the refund is coming. Ive been waaaaaayyyy too patient with him (10 months of this going back and forth and no effort from him). So, he knows I have the proof that shows he understand the situation and how much he owes me. It's very clear cut.

He is not in VA. He is in California.

    pretty simple stuff here:

    a. go to your police department, file a report
    b. go to their police department, file a report
    c. file an internet fraud case here
    d. if he claimed he used the usps, go to them file a report.
    e. save all emails, his bank details on the back of the check and all other pertinent info.

while this is a lot of work, you never know what could result or even when...after he does this a few times, the name will start to ring bells but by all means, let him know that you have filed all the above and email him the proof. usually that will work in itself!

also, if it doesn't work out...please post his name or ebay handle so that anyone else researching them prior to a transaction will be able to see the previous history.

was it insured? ive only had 1 postal experience fraud and it was handled very efficiently...ended up not being fraud at all as it was just a substitute rookie mail carrier that was filling in for my route and she mis-delivered it. however, 3 postal employees combed the neighborhood/route and found it. but needless to say, neither the seller or i thought the other one was telling the truth....in the end, the postal service did their job and we laughed about it afterwards.
