What's the very least amount one can expect to pay for a graded '52 Mantle

Thinking about chasing this card. If I go about this, it'll take long-term savings. Probably 12 months worth, maybe even up to 24-36 months.

What's the least amount one would expect to pay for this card? Graded, of course, I'd never buy a raw one...but I'm thinking "Authentic" "Altered" PSA 1, SGC 10, BVG 1 et cetera.

What's the chance that it'll appreciate significantly over the next 2-3 years?

Thanks in advance!

I've seen decent 1s in both companies' slabs go for $5000-$6000 cash or PP direct to buyer. The eye-appeal can affect price dramatically, so to some extent each individual card is its own case. I know of some 3s that have gone for 12k this year, and one special one that went for over 15k. One 5 went for 26.3k and another for 31.5k. A 6 went for 33k and another much nicer one went for 39k. So there can be a wide price bandwidth in any given grade.

As to future value prospects, I think the card will always be the standard bearer of the hobby-- so if any card is appreciating in value, it's the 52 Mantle. For example, 3s could have been had for under 10k a couple years ago, and now there is simply no chance of that. 2s are in the 10k zone now. As recently as 2013, the 7s were running in the 30k zone. Now they are in the 50k range, and that's for average looking examples.

As to AUTHs, those prices also vary wildly due to eye appeal; some AUTHs go for 4k and some for 14k.

The pit.com has a feature that attempts to track price movements of cards like stocks in the form of a chart.

I would love to see what this looks like for the Mantle in various grades.

Obviously the data would be skewed to some degree based on variance in the grade but it would be cool to see what kind of annual rate of return the card has averaged over a longer period of time.

Patrick in my view predicting what this card will do in the next six months or twelve months is impossible but if someone is buying trading cards for investment over the long run I just can't see this being a bad buy.

If you plan to buy one I would think saving what it takes to secure one would be the first step and saving additional funds to trade up in the event of a short term price decline would be the second. You would be almost hoping the card declines and doubling down for the next leg up.

  • two years ago, i failed in finding an acceptable PSA 1 in the 5K range

i would say that acceptable 1's would now be in the 7K range

you can find plenty of regular 1' in the 5K range now, but they LOOK like 1's

  • I just went through the same task and finding a low grade copy, PSA/SGC 2 and lower with good centering and decent eye appeal was VERY TOUGH. Most 1's are beat and seem to be going for around $5-6k these days. 1.5's are going from $6k-9k depending on eye appeal and 2's $8.5k-10k +.

When you really sit back and analyze what is out there, the total pop for eye appealing, centered low grades 52T Mantle's is very small.

I saw one this past weekend at the Toronto Sports Card Expo. It was graded PSA 1 MK. The seller was asking $5,000 CDN. A couple of hours later I wandered past his booth again and it was gone. He told me he sold it for his full asking price.

I tried to sell this one for $3000 at the Baltimore National a couple of years ago and got no takers. Even let a dealer put it in his case with a $3300 price tag on it, again with no takers. Later sold it for $2700 cash plus some very nice vintage cards.

I remember several years ago a few prominent dealers at the National telling me that the easiest card to sell bar non was a PSA 1 Mantle from 1952. They said the reason behind it is so many collectors wanted the card, and the chance to have a legit and authentic Mantle for many was the reason. This was before the Mantle card has been reenergized in recent years with sales of PSA 8's going for $190-200k. My guess is that there have not been a lot of new Mantle's graded in addition to the success of Ebay in helping to sell and promote cards.

We were discussing it last night, and back 10-12 years ago most high end cards were done at major shows or auction houses, and the majority of people were not aware of a lot of high end cards - outside the hobby, casual collector.... With so many eyes on cards now prices have soared for cards like 1952 and 1953 Mantles, 1955 Clemente's, 1954 Aaron's....In looking at older prices cards like Goudey Ruth's and Gehrig's have increased a little in value, but low pop cards and limited rookies in PSA 9 or 10 have skyrocketed. You don't need to be John Maynard Keynes to understand simple economics of supply and demand with these cards, and with the stock market doing so well people have disposal income to spend on cards. As long as the stock market stays near where it is high end sales will continue, but it could get interesting if that changes - high end sales will still happen but fewer people will bid on items.

My suggestion if someone wants a Mantle rookie but cannot afford it is to continue to collect quality high end cards of players that you enjoy and will apprciate in value - Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Clemente.... This way you can keep collecting and not just saving up $15-30k for a nice Mantle, and when you do find a Mantle rookie you want you have assets to sell to pay for it. Buy the card and not the holder, and collect items that you like no matter what the book value says it is worth.

Those are great and what collecting is about. I have a couple of Topps Traded Strawberry cards in 8.5 and 9 just because they are cool cards to have, they cost $20-30, and I could not get one as a kid because I was not going to get a Topps Traded set. Matt - I bet you have a bunch of 1985 McGwire's, Clemens, Eric Davis and Puckett cards along with 1986 Topps Traded sets hiding around your place image

due to this thread (price, "3 sharp corners" and the centering as well), I just picked her up today...wont state the price, but I think it was an absolute steal. and I know there's a few detectives out there, so shouldn't be that hard anyways... just hoping that it actually gets delivered and ends up being legit. I am always skeptical until I get the actual cards in hand.

A 52 Mick is always a solid pickup. It's the first card most people hope to see, when you tell them you collect cards. It's the most recognized beyond hobbyists, even over the Wagner. Strong centering on that specimen, too!

Beasty card. I was looking at that one right before I picked up my SGC.
