A Stacks win today - something a little different

Can post this now that the invoice was received and I can confirm I won it. Boy does Stacks need to fix the bugs in their website, must have counted at least 5 major bugs in their system today without even searching...but that's another story.
The core of my chopmark set is centered around the concept of "East meets West", or western minted coins that made the journey east, picked up a few chop marks then came back home. This piece falls outside of that theme, a Japanese 2 Shu, minted between 1772 and 1824 with a few nice chopmarks and attractive toning. Nice bang for the buck. Don't see many of this type posted here.

Anyone here collect these or care to share their own examples?

Japanese Coins of the Shoguns
You may have seen my little 2-bu piece, which I thought provided some nice bang for the buck at around eighty bucks before slabbing.
I like square and rectangular coins, for some reason I've never been able to define.
This is the only Asian coin in my collection.

I've been known to do that, more often than not.
<< <i>Very neat little coin, and yes, nice toning indeed. The chopmarks definitely add some character, too.

Great coin LordM. They don't seem overly scarce and thus are quite affordable.

Thanks LochNess. What really happened is that I had high hopes for this auction with many Spanish 8 Reales coming to auction, many from a single collection. Unfortunately I learned that many of the coins should not have earned the grades they did with hairlines common throughout. With a lot of hope that turned into not a single 8 Reales for the core set, I turned to my go to "coin fix", a cheap chopmarked example with good eye appeal. Many times I question if I actually get more fun and enjoyment from this inexpensive side set than I do from my core collections.
<< <i>Nice coin, but we all know that receiving an invoice from SB is no guarantee that you'll actually get the coin. In fact, let me call SB today to assert my claim to this lot. >>
EVP don't even get me started.
1. Placed a bid with about 2 minutes to go.
2. Received email confirmation of bid
3. SB site locks up on me with message "A critical error has occurred. An unexpected error has occurred."
4. Auction ends, website still hosed
5. Website shows my bid as being higher than the winning bug, but NOT winning the lot
6. A few hours later I get an invoice for the coin with the actual higher/winning bid.
Alls well that ends well, assuming they actually send me the coin. Either way it's an inexpensive coin that wouldn't break my heart if lost, but hope it does show up.
Very nice pickup - I like the color a lot.

<< <i>Does anyone suspect they do this intentionally to avoid sniping? or to encourage higher "max bids" early-on? I find it hard to believe that such a huge, international firm can't afford a decent website interface. Ian's site GreatCollections has a fine interface and he's a fraction the size of SB (no offense, Ian). >>
Highly doubt it because they are potentially losing out on bids which means losing out on revenue.
GC is great although I'm guessing the server load is much lower, assuming that's part of the problem here.
My point is that it can be solved and probably quite easily. They are either (1) too cheap to invest in their own site, or (2) don't care.

<< <i>Whenever someone suggests server load as the problem I always think of mega sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google ... I know their revenue is much larger than SB but so is their server load ...

Fair point.

I question the accuracy of this assertion. I wonder if it's because the person, or people, high enough to care doesn't understand the situation well enough to appreciate the seriousness. Or, maybe it's a matter of competing priorities. Long ago, Halperin (who is tech savvy) decided that he wanted his company's web portal to be the best in the biz. And, he knows what a good web portal ought to be like. But even with that commitment, ha.com in its infancy was problematic. Feigenbaum is also very tech savvy. DLRC.com started much later than ha.com, and they're not there yet but give them time. Feigenbaum is a serious guy with vision.
SB likely don't have professional IT types managing their infrastructure. We cost too much. I remember when ha.com advertised for a head/senior IT person -- eons ago. IIRC, the salary was competitive with IT salaries outside Wall St.
Yes, SB.com needs serious help. But, it may be due to ignorance rather than foolishness or indifference.

All the rest have lots of work to do. To me Stacks lacks the product/navigation design to be intuite - they need a reworked, user oriented, platform. Then there is the issue of speed and performance - currently slow. Even GC is SUPER slow to load/navigate and is not a real live auction site. David Lawrence super slow. Goldbergs is in the 1990s in terms of technology.
Stacks should get an outside expert to test performance and rework the user interface and they will be fine. I don't think its a huge undertaking just a matter of getting the right people on this.

My only comparable is a common Ansei Bu ... but I think any rectangular coin is interesting.

<< <i>Great coin. That one was actually in my watch list until the day before the auction. I tried to do a bit of price research and it seems that the coins dated 1824- seem to be a bit more common than this one. I couldn't really come to a number I felt comfortable with, and knew that my collector side could have bid too high for resale because that thing is pretty darn cool. Glad you won it, and I can feel good knowing that I didn't run you up.
Well I appreciate that, although I won it for my initial bid, only a hair under my max bid. It was there for the taking.
I also pondered how to value it, here are a few things I considered before bidding:
1. It doesn't perfectly fit my core chopmarked set, but it's closely related enough (worth spending a little, but not too much)
2. Great eye appeal (helps liquidity in the future)
3. Great looking chopmarks, nothing too obscure or questionable (a plus)
4. Fits into my favorite time period for a trade coin collection
5. These seem to be fairly common, so shouldn't cost too much, but aren't usually found looking this nice (helps liquidity in the future)
6. It's something different, I don't have another square coin (enjoyment factor)
7. As a little bonus there was already a Coinfacts image
I then compared the current high bid with what I felt the enjoyment factor would add up to for me and then put in a last minute (and almost unsuccessful) bid. Happy it worked out. It's not a science, I really focus on having fun with coins within the available budget.
