Thank you!

  • It's the reverse of a 4th century Roman Imperial bronze follis

It says IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG which translates to something like Jupiter Protector of the Emperors

I'm having a difficult time telling what letters are under Jupiter, but with that we can tell where it was minted, SM something? SM just means sacred money

  • As far as references I don't know of anything that goes more in depth on roman imperial coinage than

    this

  • need a better shot of the inscription at the top to tell you which Constantius/Constantinus that is

    I question its authenticity

Why do you say that? Pix aren't great but looks perfectly good to me, just harshly cleaned (hence the pits) and probably recolored.

The reverse exergue looks like SMK which would be Cyzicus. The end of the obverse inscription looks like AUG which would make it Constantine I. I don't have access to my library at the moment, but would guess its ca 315-322 given the obverse type.

  • the harsh cleaning give it a strange appearance but I imagine you're right, there's no reason to counterfeit such a common piece

Actually I do have access to a copy of RIC VII. It appears to be Cyzicus RIC 8, workshop B. Dated to 317-320.

  • Do you believe the obverse inscription to be IMP CONSTANINVS AVG?

+1. Both excellent suggestions. Forum also has a tab "resources" with other sites you might find helpful.

Can't really tell what's on the right side of the inscription based on the photo and the erosion around the letters. Sorry.
