What was the first year of the premium, shiny card stock? Was that 1994? Anything from that year forward cannot be classic, IMO. Has to be the good old cardboard.
In that case, I say 1987: the last cardboard year with team logos on the front.
For me, 1987. After that point in time, the designs seem to blend together and none standout nor seem memorable. I do however think the last "classic" design may very well be dependent on one's youth and height of collecting. 1987 was that such year for me.
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
For me it's when I stopped being able to tell what year the card was by the front design and that would be 1991. I miss that about Topps. I'm sure there are some of us out there that can still do that but the uniqueness of the year to year (what are the new cards gonna look like) has long since passed. Now there is barely any change. It can't be that hard to make the cards look and feel different.

1962=1987
1963=1983
1964=1986
1966=1988
So I would say 1988

I think I might vote for 1991
Things really changed production wise for Topps after that. In 1991 they were still using the same process they had for the 30 years prior.
Classic as in - what makes me like Topps? 1987

As far as the front design, I'll go with 1989. 1990 was very different and then after 1993 it seemed to all look the same for years and years...

Considering starting a Desert Storm set because of it.
