Received a searched and re-sealed 1989 Topps Hockey Box

During my fiance and son's long rejuvenating nap (they're both sick) I took the time to sort through my '89 Topps Hockey cards.

Then the mailman came and delivered a box I bought on eBay a few days ago, so I decided to take a break from set-building and crack open a box of '89s!

When I first opened the box I got a bad feeling about it since there was a "36" sheet on-top of the packs. Thought: maybe the box is put together from leftovers of other boxes

Then the I saw the packs were sitting uneven, which I'd never seen in the 60-some boxes I've opened prior.

Started opening the packs and the collation was off. Cards not matching up condition-wise, too.

Then I saw a pack with a sticker showing (I've enhanced the photo below to show the sticker) and knew then, for 100% certainty, that the box had been resealed.

Some packs didn't have gum. Hi Guru! image

No Sakic. No Lemieux. No Gretzky.

One of the reasons I started building this set is because I know the chances of someone searching and re-sealing a box of 89's is virtually zero.

Seller is offering other unopened items (inexpensive like these 89's). Has 100% positive feedback. Been around over 10 years. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt that, maybe, he bought the box this way, but I googled his user ID and it is associated with a resealed thread on another forum.

I messaged him to tell him about the box and give a heads up about his supplier (again, giving the benefit of the doubt). Haven't received a reply yet.

Please tell my mailman to quit honking the horn when I have to sign for a package. It wakes the baby up.

I haven't heard that seller name since the 1970s grocery cello pack debacle..

Sorry to hear about this Mullins. Those packs do not look good, either..

89 OPC was searched and resealed in a big way when it came out. For those three cards, Sakic, Gretzky and Lemieux. Edited to note that this is the only product I've ever opened and resealed. But in my defense it was to slip a ticket to an Aerosmith concert in for a friend of mine.

Bummer, who would have thought 1989 Topps Hockey. Maybe it happened a bit ago.

Thanks guys. Definitely possible this was searched back in the day. I still haven't heard from the seller, but I doubt I'll leave a neutral or negative feedback.

Box plus shipping was about $16 and included a 1990 Score sealed set, 1990 Bowman sealed set and a complimentary pack of Topps Premier Hockey.

There are a couple in the 1989 Topps cards that could grade 10, but since they came from a re-sealed box they won't qualify under my guideline of building the set from scratch, from unopened packs.

That is your business, of course. And I for one won't think any less of you for it. But I think perhaps you are being too kind in this case. They advertised unopened packs and sent you packs which had clearly been re-sealed. As you say, anyone who has ever handled a decent number of packs would quickly recognize these as having been searched. Whether it happened long ago or on their desk, it doesn't matter. They are clearly not knowledgable enough to make these claims. Have you considered they included all those other "bonus" items in hopes a nice guy like you wouldn't complain? Maybe I'm just too cynical. It's been a long weekend.

You're absolutely right and I've thought the same thing. Regardless of who re-sealed the packs, he should easily have been able to detect them.

I haven't decided on the feedback. Going back and forth. Mainly waiting for a response from the seller to see how he handles it.
