I can almost hear Juno Sospita yelling!

I just love the detail on so many of the Roman Republican coins. Here is a denarius from L. Procilius I just couldn't pass up.

Edited the title a smidge.

Gorgeous piece. Wish I could afford more republics but its a challenge finding bargains of them.

Great coin! I agree, many Roman Republicans are hard to pass up with some wonderful designs - I've been holding off on several just to avoid flooding my collection with them but I don't think that would necessarily be a bad thing image

I still do not own an ancient coin, but man I would buy that one in a heart beat if I saw it at a coin show.

  • very cool

this looks to be RSC Procilia 1

Laureate head of Jupiter facing right, SC behind
Juno Sospita walkring right, hurling spear and holding shield, serpent erect before, L. PROCILI/F behind

"From the types it must be presumed that the Procilia gens came from Lanuvium where the cult of Juno Sospita flourished. She is represented here in her militant character as the protectress against the dangers of war."

Note that she seemingly isn't reacting to the serpent at her feet, which also seems to be paying no attention to her.

Instead, both seem to be reacting defensively to some dread beastie we can't see, because it is out of view just off the right side of the flan.

I can guess what has them on guard, though.

Notice that in addition to her spear, Juno also extends a giant peanut to placate the creature.

So it is obviously one of the Squirrels of Hades. image

Seriously, though, that's a really neat coin.

Very nice! I'm so used to seeing and bidding on anonymous quadriga issues that I miss some fine pieces like this! Keep it up!
