Is that an 82 Grocery rack second from the bottom? I'm probably in the minority around here, but I love 88 and 89 Topps lol. 88 was the first set I ever got for Christmas when I was a kid, and I can remember spending my allowance money on 89 Topps wax packs. To this day I can remember getting upset if I didn't pull a Strawberry or Bo Jackson back then.
Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.

    Close...it's an '83. I'm a sucker for '89 Fleer.

LOL +1 I wasted more money as a kid on 87, 88, and 89 than anything. I still have a bit of a soft spot for 89.

Me too. 87-92 doesn't get any respect because of overproduction, but it will always have the nostolgia factor for me. To this day, I have complete sets in binders in my closet that I break out and look at once in a blue moon. I'll even take it a step further and say that someday, I'd like to put graded sets together of 88 and 89. It can be done fairly on the cheap with those two, and it's not about an investment for me with those years.
There's only so many of these cards that can be used to start fires or put on the grill (see prior threads)...someday they may dry up somewhat.

For some reason, we never had Fleer around town back in those days. I love 89 Fleer because of all the errors and variations, but growing up it was tough to find in my area believe it or not. All we had was Topps and Donruss.

  • Same for me with Fleer. I grew up in Louisville, KY. How about you? We always had Topps and Donruss. The only time I was able to get Fleer is when we went out of state on family vacation.

You should have seen how much unopened 80's stuff this guy had on Saturday. I saw a HUGE stack of unopened '89 Fleer wax and before I could get over there someone had bought everything for $20...for the whole stinkin lot. I was able to trade for 2 boxes. Would have gotten back there sooner, but I had a customer at the table. Which was frustrating because he never buys from me, he slowly picks through everything, complains about my prices and then leaves everything a mess.

The guy with the 80's stuff had tons of update sets spanning all the 80's, cases of rack pack boxes, cases of wax as well. It was like a school of sharks at his table.

I grew up in a small little town in Upstate New York called Ravena. It's about 12 miles south of the state capital Albany. I live in Albany now. Back then, we had only 2 places to buy cards. Ben Franklin Crafts, which went out of business in the mid-90's, and a small family run business called "Bush's Hardware Store" lol. That is now defunct also. Both places had opened wax boxes where you could just grab a couple packs quickly on your way out the door. I remember Ben Franklin having the better variety, because once a year around Christmas time, they would get the Topps "Holiday" factory sets and I would pester my mom to get it for me for Christmas lol. Great times back then for sure. And unfortunately, pestering her didn't always work image

That's too bad about Saturday. Nothing worse than someone wasting your time, and messing up your table. I love picking stuff up like 80's wax boxes and Topps traded sets if I come across them. Things like 89 Fleer and 1990 Topps are like playing a scratch ticket, because you just don't know if you will pull the holy grail for that time period. Could you imagine if you traded someone for a 1990 Topps wax box on Saturday, went home and ripped it, and pulled a George Bush or NNOF or another partial blackless card? How awesome would that be? Or even the Jeff Kent yellow back. 1990 Topps is another good set for possibilties lol.
