Those are Fivaz-Stanton numbers, assigned to die varieties (DDO's, RPM's, OMM's, etc).

The date/type of coin will tell you what kind of variety it is.

Fivaz - Stanton numbers used in the Cherrypicker's Guide.

FS-021.8 represents the old FS numbering system while FS-101 represents the new numbering system.

    Where:

101-299 = Obverse Doubled Die and/or Obverse Die Variety
    301-399 = Obverse Date Variety
    401-499 = Obverse Variety, Miscellaneous
    501-699 = Mintmark Variety
    701-799 = Miscellaneous Variety
    801-899 = Reverse Doubled Die
    901-999 = Reverse variety, Miscellaneous

The numbering system changed with the Volume II Edition of 2006. Pickup a Cherry Pickers Guide for more information.

That would be the 1955 doubled die cent, the big one.

FS-021.8 was the old FS number used for it in the old Cherrypickers guide, now in the newer editions it's FS-101.

Well, at least the new number system is logical and improved over the previous (IMHO).

    Exactly!

Especially if you consider the fact that

    FS-032 was a 1971-S Lincoln,
    FS-033 was a 1971-S Lincoln,
    FS-33.1 was a 1971-S Lincoln,
    FS-33.3 was a 1972 Lincoln?

It doesn't get anymore confusing than that.
