Question for E-bay sellers with lots of experience

I have a pack listed at $175 obo and got this question :

"Dear bigdcards,Hi, would you accept payments on this pack. The payment would be $75 on 11-2. The second payment would be $50-$75 on 11-14. I would offer $125-$150. Let me know, thanks."

$125 is simply a no, but if he did three payments of $50, I'd take it. Is there a way to do this and protect myself? Do I just politely say "no thank you"

Not on Ebay he can't. Try to get him to go off Ebay if you are doing stuff like that.
  • I would offer 3 payments via PP gift and, if the buyer doesn't accept, pass on the sale altogether. It's probably going to end up being a headache. There's not much good reason for a payment plan at that price level.

I accepted this recently on a big ticket item. No big deal. I just didn't ship until all the money was received. My buyer had high feedback and did pay. The question is if it's worth it on such a small dollar item.
  • Yeah, I get it that not everyone has the same amount of discretionary income, but someone who needs three weeks to pay off a $150 item probably isn't worth dealing with because of the potential issues.

    I would politely respond with:

Sure thing, I can appreciate budgeting and saving toward a goal.
In a couple of weeks when you have the funds and I have the item, its all yours.
Please contact me on the 14th or when you have met your goal.
    Thanks for the interest.

More headaches than it is worth. These types of buyers tend to be a lot of hassle.

Tough call. I would probably just tell them that I wouldn't do it but there's a chance the item could still be available in three weeks when they have enough. Seems like a potential for some headaches just for a $150 item.

I agree with everyone else that this sounds like it could very easily become a headache. I'd find a nice way of telling them to save the money and come back in 3 weeks or however long it takes and see if the item is still available.

Wait until the auction ends. If the item doesn't sell, let him know you will hold it until he has the funds, then list it as a BIN and sell it to him that way.

Agree with the above comments on making sure it's a paypal gift.

Just be courteous and understanding, which I'm sure you will be anyways.

I sold a book almost a year ago and the person is still making payments. A little here, a little there. It was supposed to be paid in full within 90 days, but it is what it is. My original costs have been recouped, so it's OK.

Make sure, too, that at the very least the first payment is non-refundable.

    Best of luck!
  • Just be mindful of the fact that while the buyer can make three payments of 50, only one of those payments would have a tracking number attached to it and a chargeback is possible on the other two -- leaving you stuck for a 100 loss. Paypal gift is the only way to go to assure you that you are not taking the risk.

I completely agree with this. I like that they are budgeting, but they need to be the one that is inconvenienced, not the seller. Just let them contact you when they have the funds, and let them know that you will go down to $150 at that time

If it was me I would ask the fellow with the ebay connections to reach out to the buyer and see what his
hourly pay is,roughly how many hrs. per week he works what kind of bills he has upcoming to
make sure he can swing the 50$ payments.image

You should not have to be the "Banker" in this transaction. If you want to sell the item to this buyer, ask him to find a source for the funds and you will do business. I personally would not exercise the option and I definitely would not mail the item until I had 100% good money - if I did decide to sell to this buyer.

Only way i would do this would be if I was sent collateral.
  • bigdcardsbigdcards Posts: 1,188 ✭✭✭
Great advice everyone. If he wants to do it via PayPal gift and pays in full before shipping, then I'll go along with it. Otherwise the pack will live on ebay until another interested party makes an offer the regular way.

Unless he has extremely good feedback I would avoid it all together. If you talk him into gift and the deal goes sour he could theoretically show the messages to eBay and get you for selling off site with gift.

It sounds like it would be more trouble than it's worth. I'd just pass altogether, telling them that you would need an agreed-upon price all paid up at once.

used to do bay-layaways for folks who needed time to pay and it was never a problem.......several years ago.

with the current payment system in place and myriad fears of scammers and unpredictable situations, i'd demand every penny of the sale or no deal.
  • mtcardsmtcards Posts: 3,340 ✭✭✭
I would totally avoid this entire situation unless he is willing to go off ebay with it and let him assume all the risk
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
