It's possible it was done by Bill Gallo an artist/cartoonist with the New York Daily News. Can't really make out the autograph towards the bottom, but the artwork resembles his work. I believe he goes back to at least the late 40's and up. Will try Wikpedia.

Wow thanks I didn't think it was possibly that old. I will check later to see if I can make out the auto.

  • There was a sports cartoonist named Herb "Hype" Igoe. He was known mainly for boxing pieces.

    Hiya John

I don't believe it's the same artist? Igoe died in 1945 and DiMaggio was in the Army/WWII during that time. I don't think the "timing" fits the 'narrative' of the artwork.

Plus, the way he signs his art it totally different than what you have.

BTW - that's a great piece! Is it original artwork?

    Igoe artwork:

    Hi Mike,
I honestly don't know it feels like original paper not some sort of copy?

    Looks original on my screen.

Can you scan or take a closeup of the sig?

This article mentions Hype's son Edmund, so perhaps he was an artist as well?

Here's a piece done by his son Ed Igoe - you can see his sig was a bit simpler here:

Upon seeing the close up of the auto. it's not Bill Gallo. But the artwork/style resembles Bill Gallos' work or vice versa. Much of his work is archived at Syracuse University according to a Wikpedia link to SU if you care to check it out.
