Cards at work

So I'm in our Dayton office this weekend and one of my co-workers overhears me talking about cards. He says he has a few older cards from the 60s and 70s to show me and is on his way to get them now. He lives fairly close to the office so I will post some pics when he brings them in. He says a few are in the 'thick' holders and albums.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

He does have some good star power. Baseball, football, basketball, and hockey from the 60s and 70s. Here are a couple that caught my eye initially.

IMO, most all cards are mid-low grade (psa 3-5).

Sorry for the poor pictures. There is a glare on my phone and I don't have access to a decent scanner at the moment.

Nice. Coulda seen a lot worse. I know those exceeded my expectations. Always fun to see another's collection, regardless of intent to buy or just view and advise.

    Thanks for sharing.

Hopefully those cards haven't adhered to the plastic.

Here are a few more. Jim, they exceeded my expectations as well. I was expecting some 88 Donruss and Topps (he did have around 5 pages of 88 Fleer, 88 score, and a 90 Topps Griffey).

He has no complete sets but several low/mid grade stars. 2 albums of cards (several 61 fleer bkb) and the few shown in the lucite holders.

I'm trying to give him a fair offer if he would like to sell. Some of the cards in the albums may get an 8 (on a good day). I don't think any star will grade higher than a 6.

    Thanks,

The '57 Clemente and the Mantles have really nice centering including the '69. Nice collection there. Good luck.

Had the same thing happen to me sitting with some of my fellow sales reps at breakfast - ironically enough it was the morning before the National and was discussing cards. One of our reps is in his 60's and has a baseball background and mentioned he had some cards he needed to move. Said he had complete sets from 1959, 1960, 1972, 1977, 1978, and 1980. He also had singles in pages, and I had him send me some scans of the cards. The singles are mainly from the 60's with some 50's, and they are in decent shape - PSA 3-5 with a couple of Mantles outside the sets - 61 and 67.

A month or so later I get to see the cards in person and the cards from 50's and 60's are ok, but the 1972 set, 1978, and 1980 set all look good - checked out the Murray, Henderson, and some 72's and they look like cards to submit - probable 8's and the centering is the only thing on the Murray keeping it from a higher grade. He has asked me to sell the cards for him since he has had them for 35+ years and needs some space at his house and said that he would not know what to sell them for and that he wanted me to move them for him. Get him a fair price and told me to take a cut, but I said I would be happy to move them for him and not to worry about the money. Supposed to get them in the next few weeks, and will post some scans of cards when I get them.

That's some serious star power! Look at all those Mantles!

I had some bad image links. All should be revised.

Again, great collection your co-worker has. He was a serious collector for sure. Great stuff.

Excellent centering on the Schmidt rookie. The 73 Ryan centering seems adequate as well.

Haha, yes. As I recently learned, there has been many discussions about the MB rookie. I don't think the card in the image is a MB. The far left would be solid white instead of just a white line.

I reviewed the cards thoroughly over the weekend. After closer inspection, the majority of cards in the binder had creases. image

I estimated around $2k of value based on recent ebay sales and vcp of estimated grade. The two albums were loaded with stars. Great eye candy and good centering for the majority of the cards. However, the creases were killers for anything above a 5. The ones in the Lucite looked crease-free so I think the Wilt and Russell have legit shots at 6 or 7s. I'm not sure if he's interested in selling (I did make an offer), but my goal was to give him an idea on what he had.

    Thanks,

Very nice array of collector cards David. Mantles in any grade look great.

If he sells? Good luck with the sale.

That Schmidt rookie looks really clean, and the centering is spot-on. I'd take a Schmidt any time of day. image

I overlooked the Schmidt in the summary. I think the Schmidt would pull a 7, plus it had great centering. It was in a Lucite holder and looked crease free.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Did your co-worker take that Schmidt in the office after a long lunch, or was it in the morning, after a coffee break?
