1978 Topps molitor rookie

Need some opinions. All things being equal (sharp corners, fine surface gloss,55/45 or better centering)how much does the presence of the front ink smudge detract from the value compared to a non-smudge example. I examined a friends with a 17x magnifier and other than the presence of the ink smudge it is an excellent card. How much will this affect the grade designation. -2 grades? Thanks.

    Can you post an image?

I think its more "I won't buy one with the smudge" or "Who cards about smudges?" issue. A two grade reduction in price is probably a fair guess.

A quick completed auctions search of PSA 8 or 9s and I didn't see any with the smudge. I'm sure there's some out there but I think they would sell less than the non-smudge.

you can find ink-smudged examples in old PSA 9 holders if you look enough. the ancient grading methods have since been precluded by experience and common sense. the current standards would make it much tougher to grab a 9, but an 8 wouldn't be out of the question.

Like itzagoner said, you're pretty much looking at an 8 at best with the smudge. I'd guess that a perfectly centered card with sharp corners and the smudge as the only flaw might be able to garner a 9, but that's just a guess.

Here's the one I just got yesterday in the mail. Small smudge and oc but it's hard to find a good raw example of this card. I'm not getting it graded but I'd guess its a 7.

Also, there are different amounts of the smudge, rather than just a matter of smudge vs. no smudge.

Like others have said, in holders w/ old flip or new, you can find 8's w/ smudge, but varying amount of it on there. 9's are harder to find.

    smudge 8

    smudged 8

    another smudged 8

    ugly sorta smudgy 9

As usual the forum members have been very helpful. The 4th listed example is the closest one that resembles the card in question, with just a bit more ink. Think will make an offer for it. Once again thanks for your views.
