Signed AUTO Cards Group Break Input Wanted

I have a large (30,000)+ baseball cards signed collection. With group breaks becoming popular, I was wanting feedback on an idea of a potential break. I have weened out the smudges, personalizations etc. I have this fabulous one owner collection that I purchased a few years back that I was wanting to figure the best way to move it out. This post is for honest feedback and to see if it would be a neat idea. The cool thing about this collection is that it was original put together by two autograph hounds from the 1960s-early 2000s in person. I have sold many tough deceased to hard core collectors such as Olbermann. We still have thousands of stars, HOFers, adn deceased. My idea was to put random lots together of perhaps 5 card lots or 10 cards lots together ranging from $25-50 each with atleast 1 HOFers and/or star per lot. The ration is about 40/60 when you figure stars/deceased/HOF/vintage (pre 1980) compared to commons. These have bold and period signatures for the most part. Most HOFers were signed during their playing days as well as 50s and 60s. Some later. This is why this lot is attractive. The Mantles were sold, but tons of HOFers and stars like Aaron, Mays, Robinson, Mathews, Seaver, Ryan, Ripken, Maris etc. I also have tons of FB/BKB and hockey so it is kind of overwhelming to try to see what needs slabbed so everything is still raw. Please feel free to shoot input regardless of opinion. I think it would be a fun way to sell these off faster at a discounted rate. Retail for everything is around $250K, but I only have baseball and football ready at this point. Baseball takes up about 50-60%+ of the entire collection with football next then hockey. Thanks in advance for input.

I primarily collect vintage baseball and some football cards.

$5 for a random auto is not a discounted rate.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

  • It is if stars and HOFers are involved. $5 for Nolan Ryan, Gary Carter, Tom Seaver, or even Jim Rice is a bargain. Not including 1950s, 60s and 70s commons that fetch $5-10 each on ebay. The goal is to break it and give good value in lots. Someone will get a Maris auto for $25 or 50 lot. 1954 Topps G-VG commons are not a bargain at $9 or $13 each but they do set breaks like over on net54 and they eat it up. Not everyone will hit the Aaron RC. That seems like more of a gamble to me. However, I do appreciate your input. I would understand your point if I were putting 8 1990 commons together and 2 1990 semi's or commons together. This would not be the case. More input needed. Thanks.

  • Also you can view the collection in person if you are close to KC, MO or St. Joseph MO. We have been in the process of opening a shop for 2-3 years and plan on having it open in a week or sooner. Still looking for a few display cases. Our SultanofSwat handle is ran through our new store email because I have a partner so please PM me through that handle or this one is OK. This is my personal handle I have in the evenings. I would love to have more feedback. We are considering group breaks etc. through the brick and mortar as well.

    Thanks Jason

So Jason, you have 2 user names on here?
  • Best to go straight to the BST with this one. Where in KCMO are you opening? Best of luck to you out there.
  • Yes next week Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We are north of St. Joseph about 5 minutes in Savannah, about 1 hour north of KC. Yes I have my user name and we have one with our other email for the store. This thread is meant to be for feedback. If I decide to actually do a group break I will post on BST with details.

    Thanks

So let me throw out 2 crazy ideas. Shop the whole lot to Leaf or someone who could include them in one of their production releases.

Or have them put in packs and sell them by the pack.
  • I would recommend you make a list of what you have so prospective buyers can properly evaluate what you have to offer.

Also, this sort of thing seems best suited for B/S/T.

I think the thread is in the right place. He is not selling them on here, just looking for ideas.
  • Hey guys….yes I agree we need details, but hard to get super detailed on 30K+ cards. However, I would get lists and photos together if I pursued such a venture. If I decide to do this based on feedback, I will post in BST. I was just looking for input and ideas here as far as a break being worth the time and effort. I appreciate the forum here and value all input. Thanks and keep it coming.

No need for super details. What is the approximate age range of the cards? (specifically baseball)

Are there 200 for 1950's or are there 2,000?

Are 20,000 of the cards from 1984?

  • Perhaps separate by sport. Not sure how many guys are going to be interested in 4-sport auto breaks. I would definitely be interested in a hockey-only one. I am sure others are the same way about baseball, etc.

Jason ... you and I spoke about this a little over one year ago. At that time, you thought the cards were worth the following:

50 cents each for minor league/college
    $1 each for ceritfied commons
    baseball: 50s $4-10 each (depending on years), 60s $3-7 each, 70s $2-5 each, 80s $1-2 each, 90s+ $1 each
    basketball: 70s $2-4 each, 80s $2-3 each, 90s+ $1 each
    football: 50s $3-8 each, 60s $3-6 each, 70s $2-5 each, 80s $1-3 each, 90s+ $1 each
    hockey: similar to basketball.
    Racing/Olympics/golf etc: $1 each

As far as the baseball was concerned (I don't believe we discussed any other sports) I thought your prices were quite high and you would have a lot of trouble selling the commons at those prices. Is this still approximately what the breakdown would be if you packaged them into LOTS?

More importantly, how is your daughter Mychal doing? I pray that she is fully recovered.

  • I think Doug is close to spot on and we had some discussion in the past. Olbermann kind of spoiled me with prices he paid for some stuff I listed in the beginning. I plan to work baseball and football today and will come up with counts of proper ratios more in line with Doug's prices. I also have to consider vintage HOFers with vintage sigs and the very tough deceased. I know the baseball has many (hundreds) worth over $35 each and some in the $100+ range. I will take into all considerations and make it a fair break. I will post sometime today on BST for baseball at least which would be the more appropriate forum. Anyone have advice on how to do the break fairly? I have purchased yellow bubble mailers. My thoughts were to so similar with wax breaks. Get commitments until sold out and then everyone pays at once when all are packaged. Any thoughts? Only problem with this could be baseball there will be ALOT of lots. I am guess in a few thousand lots. Advice or feedback appreciated.

    Thanks

Mykal is doing great. Thank you for asking. She is in marching band and finished golf. It's been a journey and taken some toll, but we are blessed! Thanks so much for asking. She just got her first job and has her license. A living miracle and I am just blessed to be her dad. Life is short and we should take every moment and day and strive to be sensitive to other people. My experience made me more compassionate exponentially. She may even start helping me in the shop!

  • OK we have the baseball, football, and basketball broken down. Last question and we will try maybe a break on the BST forum. Would you guys be into a break at $25 per lot or $50 per lot? This would be baseball only. FB and basketball has to be set differently and I will explain over there. I will put a full day in tomorrow posting picks if we think it would go. On the baseball at $50 I would have 1800+ lots at $25 3600+ lots to move it all. THinking of giving away some random pieces of memorabilia in the baseball as well. Please give me feedback and thanks in advance.
