Not too sure how these pictures got so washed out, but here is the start of a long, hard (but hopefully inexpensive) journey
My criteria, generally, are: identifiable date, Fair or less, preferably poor...damaged coins avoided where possible.

I *really* want this coin to grade...but one area of the edge (not the whole coin, not even close) has a mild bend to it. We may see one day.

Shows are my favorite place to pick up lowballs. Typically, when you find one, they are buried deep inside junk boxes and are actually priced reasonably, as opposed to all the other over priced junk that is so typical.

Ouch, I don't think that one would even get a PR1. I would grade that one an EEK 0. I can barely make out that the coin is / was a large sized Capped Bust.

That is the most worn coin I have ever seen. I can't see where it would not qualify as a condition rarity.

That will be a cool set.
Sounds like your plan is to get them graded...which is cool if that is how you want it, but personally I would do an album.

My 2 cents is that lowball CBH are not in demand in the same way that classic commems and other series are, so sending them in for grading
would probably double the price of your collection and add no value....could be wrong of course, but that's my hunch.

Here is your 1837., Complete with a CAC sticker. Why anyone would want a CAC sticker on a PO01 coin is beyond me. Could start a new collecting frenzy----PO01 coins with CAC stickers. I guess it adds about $1430 to the value.

Honestly, I'm dubious on a collection for which the ultimate goal is a set of featureless disks with all the detail worn away.

I'd so much prefer buying, owning, and viewing a set of gorgeous original good-vg coins, which, in the ultimate irony, could actually be less expensive than Poor ones

I just recently completed a Barber half collection in G-VG+. I also tried to match the surface toning. It's really nice.

At the very least, he will have bullion silver when the spot goes to $50 and northwards!

I have a place in my heart for the low grades. Ajaan's is quite interesting. The faintest silhouette of the eagle remains. A shame the same cannot be said for the date.

It can be difficult to identify fads except in retrospect. A couple hundred years ago, coin collecting could have been considered a fad.
