Local B&M Purchase

Last week I was able to take some time off work, and decided to pay a visit to a local B&M that I had been going to since I was kid. I've going back an forth on the piece below for a few months now and decided to pull the trigger. The price was good, and I believe the piece will fit nicely into my set. I'm curious what all of your opinions are on the piece. The owner said this this came out of a set he bought several years ago, and it resided in an album for quite a while. Thanks for looking, and your input.

Looks legit and original. The spots may come from it being in a Wayte Raymond album for a while. Nice pickup.

Looks like a very nicely struck, lustrous coin, however I'm not a big fan of the mottled toning though, sorry. The color is strange in your photo, looks almost cleaned. Is the coin yellowish in hand or is your white-balancing off slightly?

Sorry I probably got a bit too much direct light on the piece, a couple more out of indirect light below. I would say the overall color is closer to this.

this lincoln
this is a type of lincoln i strongly suspect of being copper or brass plated

using a 5x glass to my monitor it looks like plating is coming off and stuff is plated over
the area on his lapel really disturbs my attention

use a loop on his neck especially

Not plated. Reverse wheat lines wouldn't be so sharp with a plate job. Typical strike/funky luster I've seen on coins from this time frame. Looks OK from what I see. 62.

I see what you're talking about Teddy... they look like pits. Normally when a coin's plated the addition of the extra layer of metal tends to fill in small details like wheat lines, etc and I don't see that here. Of course my opinion might be different if I saw it in hand. Odd piece.

if that stuff is smeared in the right field, perhaps acetone will do some good on this? there are many threads asking about acetone + red unc copper and if it should be done. maybe also look up mineral oil on unc copper/bronze.

Absolutely no bad intent taken, that's why I wanted your opinion. I did spend some time last night looking over the area you are concerned with, and captured some more close ups of the neck. I don't think this is plating, and I think it must be some contamination from the album it was stored in.

I have never dipped red copper into acetone so that makes me a bit nervous to try. Though if it will save the coin in the end if it is indeed contaminated I would love some advice on how to do it properly.

To be frank, this coin does not fit in your collection. I looked at your set last week when I was helping with a question you had. You have a very nice start to a Lincoln set, but the spotting on this coin
is far worse than anything currently in your collection. Rarely will you find an early date Lincoln raw, that is nicer than what you can buy holdered. The 25-d is a tougher date, but you can do better than
this one. JMHO

Sunken area around the mm is a bit unusual, though I'm not very familiar with reddish, teens and twenties better date Lincolns.

At first glance I though the field in front of Lincoln's nose was sunken or gouged. But, that could just be that black smudging causing that illusion. The color doesn't look entirely natural to me....but again,
I'm no expert on red copper.

I appreciate you comments, and I'm starting to agree that this piece might not be the right fit for my current set. I definitely was drawn in by the strike, color, and luster, but the spotting might be hard to live with. Thankfully, I am not to deep into this purchase and can simply enjoy it for what it is.

My first thought was that it looked lacquered. If so, acetone may work wonders.
