1821 cent vs. MS-66 1944-S Walker, and the winner is...

The 1821 cent! I started a thread about this sometime back and was debating on which to get. I came close to getting one in PCGS VF-30, but hesitated to pull the trigger as it was well over guide. Then out of the blue, I get an Ebay 10% off coupon, first time that ever happened to me. Then when I went to look at that cent again, the buy it now changed into an auction with the same starting price. I gave up on that one and looked some more. Lo' and behold, I found another 1821 cent, but in a PCGS OGH graded XF-40. Of course the price was a bit higher, but not over guide like all the other ones were, it was under! I ended up pulling the trigger and am really happy with my purchase. I have some issues taking pictures of circulated copper, the detail in my pics is all there, but the coin is more milk chocolate brown than is shown. There is also some slight woodgrain toning on the obverse which does not detract from its appearance.

I'm glad you purchased this coin. VF graded Coronet Head cents are frequently ugly, with ticks and nicks all over the portrait and fields. The XF40 above is a very decent 1821 cent. On top of that, it's much tougher in XF than VF. Now go get an 1823 cent in PCGS XF or better to match it. I dare you! image

I agree with rhedden: The XF40 above is a very decent 1821 cent. On top of that, it's much tougher in XF than VF.

Reshot with warmer lighting, this is the true color of the cent in hand. You can also see the woodgrain toning on the obverse. The focus looks a little off, will need to work on that too on the next retake. I guess this will need to be my setup for darker copper.

I like it, and I'd like it better if I could break it out and touch it. I think you could appreciate the color better raw.image
